If you apply this line of argument consistently, the first thing you should do is ban civil servants and teachers from elected office and party political positions. Because then they're openly expressing or subscribing to views that can make people uncomfortable.

IMO, you can't view a headscarf (which doesn't explicitly say anything about LGBT people, it's at best an imperfect correlation) as a bigger threat to neutrality than, e.g., a teacher who sits on a city council for a party with strong views.

I guess it's kind of hard to view the dismissal of one grublike phrenologist as a major hit to free speech after major American universities have in the past year banned the use of words and eliminated entire departments in the hopes of pleasing the senile president

i'm fully sick of this "racism is just another academic idea to be neutrally debated in the ivory tower" bit, it is transparent and long past tiresome

“if we don’t stand up for the free speech of racists, it puts everyone’s free speech in danger.” - guy who only ever talks about free speech when it’s racism

I wonder how many of the academics currently handwringing and signing open letters because a racist and eugenicist is in trouble expressed any support for the UT professor denied tenure without justification or criticized vetting of more and more researchers by the security services in France.

It's a hyper-individualistic view of academic freedom in which the "special boys"do all the junk science they want. While the real core of it is self-regulation and jugment by your peers according to the standards of your discipline. There's a whole social/collective aspect to it as a safeguard!

“Do black people have human levels of intelligence? Are gays degenerate?” The thing is, you would not allow people to waste time and scare their coworkers with this nonsense if you ran a Walmart. A certain level of order is required to get anything done.

If 99% of your direct colleagues and experts in your field nationally and internationally think you're a clown and wouldn't rank you competitively for any position, your academic freedom is not curtailed. We don't need creation scientists to have "viewpoint diversity" in biology departments.

I'd really like to see a Venn diagram of people who are super concerned about plagiarism and proper citation etiquette and people who think LLMs are a must-use tool for literature review because who needs to read all this stuff anyway.

The most absurd about this clickbait article is that the lifestyles of Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos, etc. are almost universally repulsive to the average person, let alone the average critic of plutocracy. I'm pretty sure that MacKenzie Scott is a lot happier than Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk. And if Zuckerberg had quit in 2016 to enjoy a quiet life after creating the Facebook/Insta/Whatsapp ecosystem, he'd also be a lot happier.

At least Meta would not have been renamed after a braindead idea that would have got any other executive fired, and Zuckerberg wouldn't be frustrated that creating a platform that was super useful to millennials 20 years ago doesn't give you great insights about AI.

What it's not about: sleeping at the office because your family despises you, have to cozy-up to strongmen for whatever reason, have daily meltdowns on X, become an object of mockery who can't interact with 'normal' people, get associated with braindead schemes like DOGE

The whole point of money is to buy you freedom and peace of mind. You don't worry about losing your job. You can live comfortably. You can purse your passions. You can spend time with your family and friends. You can make a positive impact. You don't have to compromise your ethics.

Oui.

The most ridiculous part is that we're supposed to believe that a sport that has set up a gazillion weight classes, to be able to accommodate the huge strength differentials between a 50kg boxer and a 90kg one, cannot find a way for SRY and trans women to compete and must ban them.

I keep seeing arguments that the Government should have spent the money on services eg Sure Start rather than lifting the two-child benefit cap. The evidence for cash transfers is very strong. And cash transfers go straight to families. Their decision is completely evidence backed and valid.

For the Guardian, @turnbulldugarte.com and I discuss our research that clearly shows one thing: Labour's anti-immigration strategy will only strengthen Reform and weaken its own electoral prospects. I think one of the better, more subtle tributes to Robert Redford's life is the string of utterly iconic female co-stars who've come forward to eulogize him; each of them take-no-shit types like Fonda and Streisand, and every one of them without a single bad thing to say. A model for male behavior

The difference is that the “office junior” will presumably not make up studies or mistakenly transcribe key statistics even when mistakes are pointed out, which “Deep Research” does constantly. These are errors you notice when you ask ChatGPT to produce a report on something you’re an expert in.

James O'Malley@jamesomalley.co.uk

This is just obviously untrue, as anyone who has used Deep Research can plainly see. Too many people still have their head in the sand.
