Jenrick's brains Weigh a couple of grains Avoirdupois Is his Albatro(i)s
Robert Jenrick, Reform Treasury lead, proposes this agenda as an alternative to closer links "𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺𝘀" - Replace GDPR with New Zealand-style Privacy Act - Fully re-legalise Imperial units - Review all unchanged EU law - Automatically repeal remaining EU law in 5 years unless retained

“Burn it all down” takes seconds to type, and it has become the accelerationist rallying cry of a furious decade. It promises a clean slate, a fantasy especially seductive to those who will never have to clear the rubble. 4/ monikabielskyte.substack.com/p/peace-is-n...

As much as I despise Elon Musk I also loathe the many journalists and tech and finance professionals who mindlessly enabled his grifting, self-serving bullshit. They facilitated his election interference, his racism and his destruction of USAID. Some continue in their complicity even today.
Today I saw the new 4 hour documentary Musk, directed by Alex Gibney. There were too many times to count that a sold out theater burst out laughing at Elon Musk, something he said or did, even sometimes just how he looked. I believe that is his worst nightmare come to life.

‘We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.’ This is a CEO openly confessing to a level of acquired mental indolence that, were he not coddled 24/7 by an army of paid underlings, would make him incapable of living independently and feeding himself. He’s fine with it. Your kids won’t be.
Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?” Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...

literally thousands of jobs in higher education were cut *last year alone* and there's been almost no media coverage and no government action
I think it's absolutely mad that today there's a *national news story* about 400 oil platform workers losing their jobs, and the government being blamed. 25% of the UK TV industry lost their jobs in the last 4 years and we never hear a peep about it! Some jobs are 'real jobs' I guess.

There’s more to be said about the relationship between Pinker-style stardom and the state of academia. Not because academia is Woke, but because star systems loosen rigor at the top while solid scholarship becomes a dead end lower down. Shoddy celebrities and broke PhDs proceed from the same machine
Sable Basilisk was always a more intriguing character anyway
It’s a failure of imagination and wider reading on the part of tech guys to invent Roko’s Basilisk, a thought experiment about a vengeful god that will punish you for not cooperating, while their tech enrages Mother Nature, a vengeful god we’ve had available in our pantheon for millennia.

I eventually finished the book, 'Rebel Without Applause', while I was an undergrad—it was published in 2003 by Bookmarque who specialised in books on more obscure cars. Copies sometimes go for silly money www.abebooks.co.uk/book-search/... I think the only actual bookshop I ever saw it in was Foyles

Pedagogy is not some new, unsolved problem awaiting its Silicon Valley disruptor. If you want good teaching in any given subject, it’s there to be had. If you just don’t want to pay for it, then all we’re really talking about is how much you want something for nothing. That’s nothing new, either.
We know how to teach books in the age of AI: small classes, close reading, research-engaged learning (which is how you ’let students see you struggle’). The issue is nobody will hire and pay the requisite # of faculty to offer this.
