Flávio Bolsonaro rumoured to have fled Brazil after presidential election loss
Authorities demanded he hand over his passport after loss to Lula but far-right senator remains unaccounted for

@adambecker.bsky.social book "More Everything Forever" is a fucking masterpiece that got me thinking about a lot of these parallels. I read it the same week as I reread Norm Cohn's "Pursuit of the Millennium" and thought was: This keeps happening.
“Billionaires who popularized stock-based lending include Larry Ellison and Elon Musk. Both borrow to avoid having to sell shares—which could trigger a taxes and dilute their voting rights—in companies they founded.”

1. Not sure when a new, on-the-record rape allegation against a sitting president isn’t considered news — especially considering Trump was found liable by a jury in a similar case — but it was ignored by most mainstream media outlets
Where we are as a country: in opposition to the establishment of democracy in Venezuela because it could infringe on the extractive contracts the president’s buddies have arranged with the current regime.
Where we are a a country: the Secretary of State waning a Nobel Peace Prize winner not to peaceably assemble because that won’t lead to democracy. www.axios.com/2026/10/27/r...
This, but also, as a liberal I believe in freedom and human rights for all people, all around the world. That translates into rooting interests in elections where freedoms and rights are on the ballot, as they often are.
I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.
So long as billionaires like Musk and Zuckerberg are using their wealth and power to influence elections in countries they don’t live in, I think it’s probably okay for the rest of us to celebrate when they fail.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly.
Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

this might rank as one of the most important outcomes of the night if it happens. would give dems the ability to begin to make north carolina a democracy
this is honestly invigorating—maybe because the US far right has been on the rise most of my life, maybe because it suggests why the far right being unpopular is not enough. mostly: because it gives us something we can do
Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different
Instead we should focus on which messages, ideas, and visions beyond "we need to beat the far right" have mobilized large parts of society. We should understand the organizational structures behind these victories and acknowledge that they are about more than defending the status quo.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
it is my deepest and most fervent wish that the tech oligarchs suffer consequences for openly allying with fascism the world over
maybe we can extradite zuck in 2029
In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.
Honored to be made a "coastal elite" because I think the more than two centuries in which the White House wasn't a gaudy monstrosity was not in fact an insult to ordinary working people
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted
Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights:
“I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”
interestingly this interest in black voters doesn’t extend to the republican effort to deprive them of federal representation, nor do they seem interested in asking whether republican candidates are burdened by the fact that trump talks like a klansman
Musk said he restricted Starlink in Ukraine- causing fast moving drones to lose connectivity - and that he had every right to do so because of some terms of service or contract that he didn't show us. (He didn't address suddenly doing this with no warning to Kyiv.) www.cnbc.com/2026/10/24/u...
Not to ruin anyone’s Sunday afternoon, but Brazilians are voting for president today. We’ll start getting returns at 4pm ET, and, based on the results of the first round it’d be a clear surprise if Lula survives against Bolsonaro — even if polls have tightened in the last two weeks.
Musk is lying about Ukraine using civilian Starlink on combat drones.
Since February, any Starlink terminal operating in motion has needed military Starshield authorization.
No Starshield – no connection.
Using civilian Starlink on drones was technically impossible. Period.
Writers Guild speaks out about tech platforms squashing the @alexgibneyfilm doc about Elon Musk:
“A small handful of billionaires now own virtually every major media company, news outlet, social media platform and are demonstrating how this unchecked concentration threatens democratic discourse.”
We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps:
-It’s ‘sleight of hand’
-It’s ‘bated breath’
-It’s ‘lo and behold’
-It's 'buck naked'
-It’s ‘brass tacks’
-It’s ‘free rein’
-It’s ‘toe the line'
But if we gave our number years ago, they're still reaching out to us every single day. I haven't made a donation in 2 yrs and I'm still getting several daily texts. It feels like they don't care. They don't have the decency even to stop texting when we report them to spam several times a day.
As a fairly selective political donor, I'm prepared to say I'll give everything I can to a candidate or org who'll straight-up say "if you see my name in a fundraising text, it's not me asking and I didn't endorse it"
Just as a private equity firm buys out a corporation and strips it for parts, a consultant class is raiding the Democratic Party and getting “generationally wealthy” along the way
New from me and @adambonica.bsky.socialnewrepublic.com/article/2163...
I’ve been complaining about the disgusting/insulting/amateur-hour 90s-chain-style ActBlue emails in detail to the DNC/DCCC, with examples, since 2022.
A lot of the other Democratic voters online who were also begging them back then to stop the spam— simply unsubscribed and blocked them all 🤷
