Unscientific vibes-based political analysis: JD Vance doing an obsequious Bengals post *on X* and getting absolutely fucking fried in the replies

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

stevevladeck.com259. DOJ’s Preemptive Election InterferenceThe Trump administration's California and Alaska suits are losers. But it’ll be hard to remedy the distrust in election results they seem intended to sow.

This is one good example of how appropriations hardball can work if you're willing to not blink first. Another: take your pick for demands and restrictions on funding Executive Office of the President. Yes, literally defund the White House. EOP is the central hub of the assault on the Constitution.

My armchair analysis of Supreme Court Retirement Watch is that I genuinely don't think Trump wanted or wants Alito or Thomas to retire, because Alito and Thomas are already the Trump administration's de facto representatives on the Court, and I'm not sure he could find anyone better

ballsandstrikes.orgThere Is No Right-Wing Culture War These Justices Won’t FightWhenever a legal argument goes too far for the other conservatives, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito are right there to encourage activists to try again soon.

thehandbasket.coRepublicans don’t have a Nazi problem—they are the Nazi problemA spate of recent revelations have shown the ideologies and their adherents are one and the same.

This week’s main story is about how more and more white nationalists, antisemites, and Nazi sympathizers seem to be integrating into the Republican Party, how some of them are currently running for office, and how old you can be for JD Vance to consider you “a very young boy.”

I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

I was really expecting this video to leave me outraged. It didn't. Sad. Horrified. But I understand the DA's conclusion now. This wasn't Renee good. The driver drove directly at the cops at speed. And the gun was fired as it was happening. No chance of a conviction here

Reagan talked about welfare queens in Cadillacs, Trump talks about Somalian thieves in Mercedes Benzes, because being *real* racist has been a core strategy Republican politicians for a very long time, even if prior to Trump a lot of folks who should have known better enjoyed pretending otherwise.
