Last week the far right started peddling a narrative that the outrage over Epstein is a moral panic. Today, like clockwork, a more polite version of that narrative appears in the Atlantic. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

the thing everyone is going to have to accept is that the post-trump period, whenever it comes, will not and cannot be a project of national unity, it must be a project of partisan project of renewal, in the same way that reconstruction and the new deal were partisan projects of renewal.

Nice to see @nytpitchbot.bsky.social writing real headlines
Incredible legal journalism brain on display here, spending 1,000 words pondering a question when both your headline and subheadline supply the howlingly obvious answer www.nytimes.com/2025/07/16/u...

elon musk’s body count will end up being higher than most wars and most of the worst most oppressive regimes in history
STAGGERING: This new study of 133 countries is the first to estimate the impact of all USAID’s work. In 2 decades, it has saved *92M* lives. Current cuts, if not reversed, are forecast to cost up to *14M* lives thru 2030. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

if there was legislation that, e.g., failed to protect trans athletes while protecting trans rights in other respects, THEN you can try to have a conversation about compromise. but ceding the issue without getting anything in return isn’t compromise, you’re just losing.

the american constitution does not deal in minutiae. it speaks in generalities with the aim of establishing a limited government of enumerated powers. it is an analytical mistake to treat textual ambiguities as license to ignore that intent or the stated intent of specific provisions. (3)
I student taught government last semester in a small town that went Trump 85%. Even the overtly-MAGA students had positive things to say about Bernie (opposed to Harris or any other national Dem). A bold vision is WAY more captivating than a ‘consensus-building moderate.’ Especially in red America!!
We expected 2,000 people out in GOP-held Greeley, Colorado. 11,000 people showed up. Something special is happening, folks. Now is the time to organize in every dimension possible and get to work.

Nobody seems to have any idea who the men who detained her are The sheriff was apparently in attendence and did nothing. Maybe they were his guys. Maybe not. Maybe it doesn't matter anymore

My first reaction was a new lesson teaching types of government: in small groups students make venn diagrams comparing their experiences living under a democracy and autocracy before doing a gallery walk and reading their peers’ experiences. Then direct teach oligarchies and theocracies.
In the space of half a day, the new administration has trashed the Constitution, subverted the independence of the DOJ, granted a broad amnesty to traitors, abandoned the global community on climate and public health, and launched a wide-ranging attack on minority rights.

Less pithily, it is one part of an ongoing insurrectionist movement to strengthen authoritarianism in the United States by demonstrating there is no real cost for pro-Trump political violence. bsky.app/profile/past...
Pardoning the people convicted of crimes related to January 6 would be an extension of the insurrection that began that day, as I explained to the Washington Post: www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

Incredible how thoroughly Democrats got played here. Spent four years following through on a Trump executive order, pissed away any shot at building a real youth coalition for 2024 by alienating literally every teenager in America, lost the election, and now Trump gets to "save" TikTok. Clown shit.
In a new post from the official TikTok account, CEO Shou Chew thanked Trump for his efforts to keep TikTok available in the U.S. He characterized Trump's stance as a pro-free speech effort and touted Trump's own success on TikTok

legitimately the judges they confirmed are by and large great. and also touting this is a bit like talking about how many aspirins you gave someone and how many bandaids you put on their wounds when they had two limbs crushed and are bleeding out, minutes from death
According to the WH: • Biden has confirmed record numbers of judges who have previously worked as public defenders (more than 45), as civil rights lawyers (more than 25) or as lawyers representing workers (at least 10). • Nearly two-thirds have been women. www.politico.com/newsletters/...
Mind-numbing layers of incompetence
Prosecutors have dropped the case against an ex-Boise principal over accusations he failed to investigate sexual abuse. Hours before going to trial the state asked for the felony be dismissed since they hadn't met their duty to ensure a “fair and just trial.” www.idahostatesman.com/news/local/c...

This is definitely one of those situations where the lid has come off the boiling pot and the elites are shitting themselves. Democrats SHOULD seize this as an opportunity to channel reform, instead they're too busy giving hand jobs to Musk and Ramaswamy
If we ever emerge from this dystopia, students will learn about our murder-cartel "health insurance industry" in horror, astonished that a vast system of actuarial slaughter was *legal*. Paragraphs like this will be seen in the vein of Zone of Interest:
