The pettiest hill that I will die on is that if your cool character in a historical novel is rolling their eyes at social conventions, no they're not, eye-rolling didn't become a widely described gesture in English literature until the *1980s* books.google.com/ngrams/graph...

This whole thread is informative but the key take-away is this
I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.

Contractually obligated to repost anything that moderation labels as "intolerant against men"
Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

Section 230 is really short and really important, but the collective online sense of it is really strange. You can just read it. www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/...

@kissane.myatproto.social Do you know anywhere that's tracking the state of AI cognitive deficiency research? You seem like one of the most likely people to have an easy answer to this who I know.

A new essay on preventing social engineering that uses voice cloning. This one isn't just for companies, as these attacks are being aimed at individuals too. Along the way, we'll learn about security theory and see how it helps us address real problems. structures.systems/blog/social-...

'Are EU Kidding Me?', my critique of the EU KIDS Act, the EC's chaotic social media ban, is now forthcoming in the excellent Georgetown Law Technology Review. It's updated w/ some extra bits here files.michae.lv/papers/veale... (You can also respond to the consultation: ec.europa.eu/info/law/bet...)
The proposed social media ban, the EU KIDS Act, is perhaps the most chaotic law I have ever read! New paper: Are EU Kidding Me? Notes from a Poorly Drafted Social Media Ban. files.michae.lv/papers/veale_areEUkiddingme.pdf In the spirit of the proposal I have stayed offline and read no takes.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854

To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. All for a data center. www.gadgetreview.com/one-of-ameri...

software architect works in concert with the software engineers in the same way an architect works with structural and materials engineers the way tech startups have evolved is a bit like if the construction industry had been taken over by DIY YouTubers whose primary goal is views & sponsorships

This!! Also and I say this because I come from a broadly "security" rather than "safety" space - systems that do not function within specifications are not rationalisable to the democratic public.
Engineering (to me) is "design within constraints". Human safety, budget, time, hardware limitations are all constraints. Dudebros don't like being constrained, it's too much like consideration for others. They write code instead of engineering software.

@emptywheel.bsky.social Thoughts on effort NSPM-7 unlocks additional collection authorities, either within FBI/DHS or on the NSA side? Or possibly, whether it's likely to have been interpreted that way even if it shouldn't be?
