“Building apartment building for people will kill orcas!” cry disingenuous NIMBYs who don’t want more neighbors. But an actual car garage on 9 acres of waterfront? Not a peep. Interesting!

If we "know" there are crimes being committed in RVs, prosecute the crimes. Don't criminalize survival. Crimes happen in single family homes and apartments, too. Should we outlaw those? The right wing of the Seattle City Council has lost their damn minds.

Paris is showing how to make cities healthier and more child-friendly. More than 300 school streets are now car-free and give space to trees, play, and safe walking/cycling. The aim goes far beyond traffic safety: cleaner air, less noise, and more independence for children.

Who are folks liking in the urban/streetscape design space these days? An ideas competition for the Pike/Pine corridor is brewing and want to make sure the brief hits the right inboxes

For the love of God, stop saying this regime's ruthless authoritarianism "raises questions" and start telling us what answers you have for us. If you can't do that, get the fuck out of the way.

The timing of this raid and reports that a White House official was involved raise serious questions that should concern all Americans, regardless of political party.

There will be post-mortems after the elections about Dem performance. All of those discussions should include two structural factors: *Gerrymandering designed to make elections less representative *Massive spending by the wealthy, including unprecedented spending by the richest man in the world

One thing about Copenhagen is that there's tons of dense housing but you *never* find it fronting a busy road with cars racing past, which describes about 90% of the apartments in the US. They manage to make it feel tucked away, private, cozy. (These are all from Sluseholmen, my dream neighborhood.)

Debora Juarez, 2020: "When I hear people say there's just a few bad apples on the police force I adamantly disagree with that. It's just not a healthy tree. We need to plant a new tree, we have to completely re-imagine, re-vision what community policing is." www.kuow.org/podcast/news...

kuow.orgBad apples? Seattle Police 'not a healthy tree' says city council memberChants of "defund S-P-D" have become a common message at protests in Seattle, and for the first time the idea is getting serious attention from the city council.
Erica C. Barnett@ericacbarnett.bsky.social

Debora Juarez, an unelected councilmember, claimed, completely falsely, "I watched this mayor sream defund, come here and here and scream defund the police, abolish the police. So [fully funding 1,250 officers] is political, and I think that's offensive, and it's not fair and ain't right."

Seth Geiser reposted

Juarez also claimed, again completely falsely, that "in the real world, we are seeing more crime because we have less officers to go out and keep our community safe." In fact, crime is down and continues to decline.

There have always been people who say they'll "innovate" new ways to do reporters' jobs, from crowdsourcing to piecework news snippets to listicles. Sara Nelson's clumsily biased simulacrum of a human-reported local news site is just as obviously doomed as all those efforts to replace journalists.

In Massachusetts, we have a responsibility to protect the vulnerable and stand up for those who need it. We don’t throw trans kids under the bus for political points. We protect them—and all of our neighbors—because trans rights are human rights.

Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:

A pedestrian street can have 98% approval and it still might revert back to cars. But a car street can fail miserably on numerous measures and it will remain as is.

It’s fascinating, and somewhat frustrating, to follow the official considerations around the proposed scaling back of the Pike Place Market pedestrianization from year-round to seasonal in Seattle. An illustration of how even really popular pedestrianizations can be weakened by bad decision-making.

Qagggy!@qagggy.bsky.social

I'm taking a peek at the Pike Place Market Historical District meeting where SDOT is presenting their plan to scale back the pedestrian pilot in the winter.

Seth Geiser reposted

Pike Place should put people first year-round. In SDOT’s June survey, 98% of 5,403 respondents supported vehicle barriers. And among 224 Market businesses & staff who responded, 96% agreed. Yet the proposal for this winter would allow more general car traffic into the Market.

The Pike Place pilot project is supported so universally (98%) that it looks like a North Korean election result. Only @transportation.seattle.gov can look at that and decide it needs to be scaled back.

Part of the reason other nations have rich social safety nets is that they also have a sense of shared civic identity that comes from shared public space. When great parks are handed over to cars, people in them become more guarded, more defensive, and stingier in all kinds of unexpected ways.

The next phase of the Pike Place pedestrian pilot will scale things back to three days a week for October-March, a big concession to the idea that restricting through traffic is hurting sales at specific businesses. www.theurbanist.org/pike-place-p...

Good news for the 14.5% of people who drive to Pike Place Market (and don’t want to walk, bike or bus there): There is a public parking garage with 800 spaces (including disabled parking spaces) literally attached to the Market. It takes 1:20 to get from the garage to the shops ⏱️

Qagggy!@qagggy.bsky.social

In fact, if we are considering visitor preferences, they are voting with their feet with 85.5% arriving by walking, biking, and transit. Only 14.5% arrive by personal vehicle according to the Urban Freight Lab's own numbers.

i wish the folks recommending and supporting this strategy would consider that changing the rules every season and every day of the week and hour to hour and event to event is goddamn confusing for literally everyone and basically impossible to communicate.

Qagggy!@qagggy.bsky.social

I read the Pike Place Market Vehicle Access Pilot Evaluation Technical Memo. It's a great data source. But the UW Urban Freight Lab's recommendation to make access control seasonal is 1) unsupported by evidence and 2) based solely on (perceived) sales without consideration of other community values.

Seth Geiser reposted

Replying to @qagggy.bsky.social

"Well, surely, there must be an overall decrease in visitors!" Nope. Again, the Urban Freight Lab's own survey shows that 47% of people are visiting MORE since the car-lite pilot, with only 9% saying they visit less. (The remainder report no change.)

I tried to find common ground with others on this panel tonight, but this is one area of fundamental disagreement. Unnecessary car traffic pushing through the Market degrades the experience for everyone else, and limits the potential to create a more welcoming street for people to shop and enjoy
