Unsolicited writing advice, no. 3904: Don’t “power through” if you are ill. (This includes mental illness, depression, anxiety, stress.) Your self care matters more than your WIP. The story will still be there when you feel better.

Felt a bit shitty and confused yesterday, not sure what to do, so I put on a Blu Ray of The Man Who Fell To Earth. Tonight I felt a bit shitty and confused, so I’ve put on the LP Heathen. And both times it has completely worked. Bowie helps. Cos it’s all good art and so you think, “fuck, yeah!”

Men commit: 91% of murders 99% of rapes 95% of knife crimes 88% of gun crimes 92% of child sexual abuse It’s ’not all men’ but it’s very nearly always men. We need to own this and stop this.

Horrifically fascinating thread. I'm sure I first heard about this on QI but I can't remember if it was believed or not. QI is trusted way too much in my opinion although in fairness they will correct themselves.

Today is the 29th anniversary of a young Brazilian man finally getting medical treatment three days after getting one of those pesky fish that swim up your stream of urine and embed their spines in your urethra... er, stuck up his urethra. Finally! Proof that the legend is true! Well...

Sad to see Michelle Terry will be leaving the Globe next near. She lead the organisation through unprecedented challenges and surely leaves as its most significant contributor since Sam Wanamaker himself.

In the world of legacy corporate media, Obama is always perpetually and simultaneously 1) one of history's greatest socialist demagogues; 2) "going socialist" in a break from previous norms that redounds to a grave act of centrist betrayal.

When I think of some of my favourite films - Jaws, The Sting, The Great Escape I wasn't even BORN when these films were released The idea you *must* see films on the big screen to fully appreciate them is rubbish, sorry I saw all of the above on a small TV - still fell in love with them

Thanks to those of you who braved the elements to head out and see me in Aberdeen on Friday & Stirling last night. Your commitment to the cause of poetry is highly commendable. Next week, it’s Stamford, Bury St Edmunds, Corsham & the first of my Oxford shows. brianbilston.com/events/

Stop it When did we agree that the first few days of a theatrical run decided whether a film was great or not? People watch the vast majority of films for the first time on TV, physical media or now, streaming - the cinema experience is a tiny percent of the impact and lifespan of a film

Academy players only tonight please! All kidding aside, some players need minutes & it makes sense to use them. Players like Zubi, Mosquera, (maybe hincapie) could use minutes. Max obviously should start. But other than that I’ll be annoyed if first team players are involved

Takashi Miike talking about VISITOR Q (2001). There’s a subsection of film fandom that really really needs to try and internalize this mode of creation/understanding.

Well worth going to see Robin and Josie if you ask me. Unless you are a member of the Conservative Party. Which maybe you are, but I don't think that's a significant chunk of my following here.

The British Library is turning three of its Reading Rooms into co-working spaces. About time. I’ve been using the BL for work for 20+ years, and only ever dared use the Reading Rooms twice, cos they were scary. The cafe gets very overcrowded, and people are reading and working there…

I don't recall ever going trick-or-treating when I was a kid (in the UK in the 1970s/80s). Getting dressed up and going door-to-door was more of an American thing, right? Or is this just me? #Halloween
