Absolutely brilliant work, and genuinely surprising to see such a reasonable and critical piece on AI in The Conversation

Well, I for one am an economist who supports rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high

Saul Staniforth@saulstaniforth.bsky.social

Ash Sarkar: "The one thing the govt could do to improve the lives of young people is introduce some rent controls" Govt minister Jonathan Reynolds: "No economist supports rent controls" There you have it. Are you a young person trapped paying exorbitant rent? The Labour govt says f**k you.

The far right is winning because people are scared for the future. The left has to combat this fear head on by showing that decline is not inevitable. Another world is possible - but only if we can take on the power of capital. Me for @euractiv.com www.euractiv.com/opinion/econ...

In the U.K. some of the most coherent political points are being made by a bin whilst our PM still seems to have his microphone muted.

Count Binface@countbinface.bsky.social

Riddle me this. If somebody donates £36 million to a political party and £5 million to its leader, how is the £5 million not political? Asking for a parliamentary standards commissioner.

The most fundamental question in politics is: whose support do you need to win and hold power? Is it warlords, aristocrats, empires or "the demos"? If the answer is "billionaires", you are not a democracy but a plutocracy. That's why democracies *must* erect barricades against capture by the rich

Duncan Hames@duncanhames.bsky.social

Democratic politics will not serve the people when politicians owe their place and their futures to one or two billionaires.

UK govts don't lack resources to improve the quality of life. Even if it does not embrace modern monetary theory, borrow, or hike taxes, it can harvest billions by eliminating tax, legal and fiscal policy anomalies. Some suggestions are in the linked article. Poverty is a political choice.

Even leaving any politics at all aside: as general rule, no state can allow a group of masked men to be able to close down critical infrastructure. This is basic stuff.

Here @stephenkb.bsky.social seeks to remind the Labour government, old & new, that the point + purpose of recognising "legitimate concerns" about immigration was to understand how to differentiate these from *illegitimate concerns* rooted in intimidation + xenophobia www.ft.com/content/2279...

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)

We are witnessing a shock redistribution from the many to the rich: The profit share is at its highest level since WWII. The first bump was sellers’ inflation which ushered in Trump. The second bump is Trump’s chaos casino designed to push up profits.

Racism has had at least 500 years to prove its case and in 2026 there are assholes crying that we arent giving it a fair shake 😂. We wrote books, experimented in labs, built goverments, argued in court, enslaved people, tried to exterminate a few million more. Its been fully explored at this point.

One of the first "outrageous" claims I saw as Jason Arday's media hounding unfolded was that he ran 30 marathons in 35 days! Wow! What a thing to claim! And the newspapers all suggested there was no evidence he actually did it. Well, they clearly didn't look very hard 🙄 🧵 1/26

Not ‘adults’ but the ruling class - a tiny minority whose unchecked pathological greed sees them hoarding wealth. Buying into manufactured generational conflict keeps you angry at the wrong people.

You really want to know why kids are depressed and isolated? It's not social media. Or phones. Adults have created a world with fuck all future. No job security. No owning your own home. No real action on climate. Adults need to take responsibility for what they have done.
