Wait wait! In addition to all this: Real Clear isn’t some spontaneous thing, it’s a rightwing site funded by the same far-right billionaires - Koch, Uihlein, Bradley, etc - that want to tear down the govt, incl to destroy US cancer research. Real Clear is part of the Project 2025 effort.

So in a huge surprise to absolutely no one, it turns out that NIH director Jay Bhattacharya's new journal based on the premise of letting his friends and only his friends publish essentially whatever they want is full of crackpot nonsense from retired cranks.

UPDATE: Turns out this study was rushed for approval because of the fiscal year ending. Congress designated the $1.6M for global health security, so instead of combating Ebola, it's being wasted on this. Denmark continues to stand by the study, despite what WHO or the Helsinki declaration says.

BREAKING UPDATE: Our pressure is working! Everyone is trying to backtrack "Members of a Danish research ethics committee were informed that officials in Guinea-Bissau had approved an updated design of the study, which influenced some committee members’ votes to proceed with the trial last week."

It’s notable to me that TWO of the most recent women who have won a NoBel Prize were denied tenure from their institutions: Anne Carson and Katalin Karikó

Congratulations to Anne Carson on receiving the 2026 #NobelPrize in Literature. Carson taught at Princeton University in the 1980s and was recently on campus to deliver the 2025 Fagles Lecture: https://bit.ly/3TteJZj

The CDC just re-opened a previously shelved study that would withhold the hepatitis B vaccine from children in Guinea-Bissau, despite decades of evidence showing it is safe and effective. This is a violation of human rights, using “science” to harm some of the most vulnerable people in the world.

The Center for Disease Control is quickly turning into the Center for Disgusting Corruption. There is absolutely no reason we should be withholding a vaccine, that has been proven to be safe and effective for decades, from children. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

Russ Vought just sent a rescissions request to Congress, signaling he intends to illegally impound funds. The $810 million highlighted in this “request” (but this is a pretext to just illegally impound the funds) is not the exhaustive list of many billions of dollars he’s impounding this year.

It’s time to fund & support pro-science politicians ourselves if we want evidence-based decision making & truth, over blind loyalty to a party. The Science Victory Fund is exactly that. Send us some support today, and make a stand against the same old bullshit. 🧪🧬✊ buff.ly/78Cyu2F

Association heads are so desperate to find a “reasonable” actor in this administration (hi, AAAS) so they can legitimize a year and a half of capitulation and spineless advocacy.

HEY. LISTEN TO ME. WE ARE ✨NOT✨MAKING JAY BHATTACHARYA INTO A HERO FOR (allegedly) REFUSING TO CUT HARVARD’S NIH FUNDING BECAUSE THE PRESIDENT TOLD HIM TO. The BARE MINIMUM of being a political appointee in the US is that you abide by the Constitution. He is NOT a hero. He did his job for once.

Developing a plan that captures the best aspects of what NSF and NIH were while addressing some long-standing issues is what the effort at the @standupforscience.net policy shop is developing.

W. Brian Lane (he/him), PhD@wbrianlane.bsky.social

This is what I worry about when dems (fingers crossed) regain power, they're going to need extensive persuading to restore NSF NIH etc. to how they were, instead of trying to reinvent the process "while the patient's already on the table." We need to hand them an institutional time capsule.
