And this is the honest truth. We do not like Freedom of Movement. We do not want Europeans being able to come to the UK because we see them as foreigners, not 'fellow Europeans'. That's just a fact. But. Are we now prepared to live with it for better trade and growth? Maybe. #Brexit

James Willby@jameswillby.bsky.social

I agree. There is no way around this. And we shouldn't also pretend this is not going to be seen as a net negative. Free Movement doesn't benefit British people in the main; its about EU workers having access to the UK. We don't like it, we don't want it, but the question is can we *live* with it.

If you want the UK to rejoin the EU, you have to fight and win the arguement on free moment. That has been the case since Remain lost in 2016. Fair play to Andy Burnham for recognising that. And to rejoiners squawking, sorry, but you are going to have to actually explain why it's a positive.

You are going to have to stop screaming and claiming its all unfair and explain why the UK should open its doors to unlimited numbers of european migrants. Because that is what is required of you. #Brexit

While Piddington dominates the news, at Leicester Crown Court this man was sentenced today Ivan Jennings, a former Conservative councillor, called for terror attacks on small boat migrants and Muslims and shared target ideas, telling fellow white supremacists to kill as many “subhumans” as possible

The level of shade London should respond to the EU with if they offer Canada a deal that *doesn't* include freedom of movement of people having told the UK the Single Market and the four freedom was indivisable. Genuinely, 1000 years of being proven right. We should've just listened to Palmerston.

I mean what a bunch of copper bottomed tools. 10 years of "the four freedoms are indivisible", that you couldn't do mobility for touring artists. And now, if the Guardian is right, thats what they're offering Canada. Honestly, as a former Remainer, we should salt the earth and walk away.

So it looks like Reform policy chief James Orr has straight up broken the law here. It's also exactly the same crime Farage has been accused of re: George Cottrell donating via his mother and which Parliament is currently investigating.

Channel 4 News@channel4news.bsky.social

Undercover footage verified by Channel 4 News reveals a secret plot by senior Reform UK figures to break the law on party donations. A leading legal expert is now calling for a criminal investigation. 🔗 Read the exclusive story on Substack:

Not only are Reform in absolute meltdown this morning, but James Johnson and JL Partners, the polling company they worked with to commission those polls - founded by a former Tory Brexiteer - are absolutely screwed. Who is going to work with them?

Ireland's European Affairs Minister Thomas Byrne showing the EU remains tone-deaf when dealing with the UK. Idea EU students should pay home fees as part of a Youth Mobility Scheme i.e. £bns of UK taxpayer subsidies because "That's the way it was when you were part of the EU" is laughable sorry.

Oh and apparently the EU is talking about 'six figures' when it comes to the number of visas the UK should grant. Is it now. So we should just accept 100Ks of EU nationals should we? Labour would be absolutely mad to agree to this.

You mean Andy Pandy wants to escape scrutiny and hide in the North because its comfortable and he doesn't like London. Great start Labour ...

Financial Times@financialtimes.com

FT exclusive: Andy Burnham is looking to set up a 'Number 10 in the north', moving part of his prime ministerial operation to Manchester, in a radical attempt to shift power beyond Westminster ft.trib.al/49mgac4

Sigh. Just occurred to me that Labour redlines on Europe will be gone. With Streeting at No.11, we'll see Labour capitulate on youth mobility and home fees. In exchange for nothing. And Brussels will be emboldened on Free Movement. Rome cannot bear imperfect communion with Canterbury ...

A statement from the family of the victim of the knife attack in Belfast calling for the attack not to he used for division, and stating that many immigrants make a valuable contribution to the UK. A statement that will likely just be ignored by those wishing to exploit the attack.

Comical. The UK will do a deal on youth mobility, much as I resent it, and it will end up paying cohesion funds because the market benefits to the economy are understood. But the UK will never go to Brussels and say the EU is brilliant. For a reason visible from space.

Elena Adaal@elenaadaal.bsky.social

An excellent article describing the evolving EU-UK relations. It is good to see that attitudes towards the EU are changing in UK, and its - especially - good to see that the understanding of the EU positions by UK is seen as important. ecipe.org/insights/new...

First, the UK doesn't believe the European project applies to it. Bluntly it was for the losers of WWII. Secondly, the UK is not culturally European. Europe is foreign. Always will be. And third, if the UK says the EU is brilliant ... immediately every MEP will be like "So why not join?!" Duh

Easy win for stay out if the Euro, Free Movement and no rebate, plus schengen are the deal.

Europe Elects@europeelects.bsky.social

UK (GB), YouGov poll: EU membership referendum Join/Remain: 63% (-2) Stay out/Leave: 37% (+2) +/- vs. 12-13 March 2026 Fieldwork: 16-17 April 2026 Sample size: 2,104 ➤ europeelects.eu/uk

Interesting @ipsosgroup.bsky.social presentation at the UK-EU Forum on attitudes in UK, DE and FR on the UK-EU relationship. To me, the complete lack of interest in the UK - compared to DE and FR - on easier mobility (we mean goods when we say trade) shows once again red lines must stay.

Key argument from Ipsos is this. Any referendum would rip the country apart. Again. We are not doing this again. Its about cooperation, picking the areas where you can actually win over public opinion, and working on those.

UK economy on ‘stronger footing’ than expected before energy shock after February growth surge. Starmer and Reeves, cannot catch a break. If Trump hadn’t won that election, we would be well on the path to recovery. Damn him.

UK economy massively beat expectations in February. Growth of 0.5% was well above estimates. Be happy your third largest export market is doing well. Its in your interest.

GylesNaMopaleen@gylesnamopaleen.bsky.social

this isn't a recent dip. the cost of borrowing shot up in 2020 (brexit) and the GBP£ crashed after the 2016 vote when markets knew what was coming.

Its for those who want to join the EU - not Starmer who does not - to explain why the UK should afford rights to a Slovakian it doesn't to an Australian. And to be clear; Remain failed and Rejoin has continued to fail on this since 2016. But fine. Make the argument. Stop hiding from it.

John Springford@johnspringford.bsky.social

This is right, but I'd go further: winning the domestic argument on the free movement of people is what's needed to unlock anything further than the reset. That means Starmer has to repudiate many of his own arguments on migration. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Agreed. And its important to ensure EU nationals with no right to be in the UK are deported. As the HO has started.

Elena Adaal@elenaadaal.bsky.social

These are probably just start-up problems. Airlines should however plan more time for EU entry checks. Its important to guard the outside borders of the EU

The polling on the UK is clear. Barely 15% of Brits describe themselves as European. In Germany its 78%. There is no European identity in the UK. And that number has been consistent for decades. And its why Brexit happened. Its just not a sentiment that exists.

Marie Le Conte@youngvulgarian.marieleconte.com

christ, not to relitigate It a decade on but it's hard to watch people happily waving Hungarian flags and EU flags at the same time and not think "oh right, almost like it's not that fucking hard to realise that you can have and cherish multiple, complimentary identities"

It's not just that Orbán losing inspires hope in other competitive-autocratic countries ruled by right-wing nationalist authoritarians. It's that his loss materially changes things in those other countries, because he's been operating as a headquarters and funding source...

Good that Orban is gone. He was Putin's man in Brussels and with him out of the way the aid to Ukraine should be unblocked, plus the EU can go further on sanctions. Additionally, its another loss for Trump and the MAGA crowd; Hungary was their vision of a restored Europe. Now that's crumbled.

Worth having no right to prevent millions of economic migrants moving to the UK en masse? No. Of course it isn't. Yes, Brexit has consequences. Some negative, some positive. Thats what separation means. But on the whole, its working well and Starmer is taking the correct approach.

So they want to impose a hard border between Scotland and England. Because there is no chance - zero - of England allowing an open border to an EU state. This is not Ireland.

For those interested in what's happening in the UK....these polls for Scottish Parliament elections in May are seismic. 👇 Both SNP & Greens are pro EU and both prefer to leave the UK Union, to join the EU as an independent Scotland.

Everyone understands this ceasefire was just so Trump didn’t look weak for not obliterating all of Iran’s critical infrastructure, right? Iran is already claiming the US gave them the OK to enrich uranium, so these talks almost certainly aren’t going to go anywhere.

It would get curb stomped and Labour would crash in the polls. Nobody cares about joining the EU. The conversation I overheard at Malaga in the queue for the gate said it all. Quote: "The deal we'd be offered would be so bad for the UK, to punish and humiliate us, we'd be better off out"

Professor Philip Murphy of London University calls for the government to hold a referendum on whether he U.K. should start negotiations to #RejoinEU. He thinks this will hasten the UK’s return and expose Reform and the Tories…

The President of the United States is threatening to commit a war crime. Attacks on civilian infrastructure and deliberate targeting of clean water are war crimes. They are illegal. Which means either the US military is about to disgrace itself or he is lying because he is clearly desperate.
