You can find the book here! Because I should be posting links! I am very bad at this! (But I AM good at writing books with yearning and heat and humor and healing so at least there is that)

What bums me out about the response to Catapult's closure is all the people lamenting the loss of a publishing house that published their favorite books, but don't have anything to say about the workers who lost their jobs.
Like, I'm sorry, I feel like we moved on too quick from Elizabeth Koch announcing she was gonna sell Catapult WHILE THEY WERE VOTING TO UNIONIZE -- and now all those talented pub workers are out of work.
sorry i need to publicly be a hater for a second but what do you mean the giant 230k+ signature save mass effect petition is only about the IP and not the devs that were laid off
I'm very please to announce a public release of my drag-and-drop bookmarking, game-making, and wandering tool Scrubjay!
Scrubjay is a weird website builder that lets you cobble together web elements, images, links, text fragments, etc into a series of nested rooms...
The D&D and MTG teams unionizing might be the year's biggest gaming news story, a long overdue move in an increasingly fragile industry. Our friends and WotC employees Vanessa and Crystal tell us about their union's demands, and what they hope comes out of this.

The people behind D&D and Magic's Studio X are the reason our games are so special. Leon is fighting AI mandates, and our union is rallying with them! Sign our petition and tell the world that GenAI has no place in our industry.

It's only been three weeks since I moved to Chicago and I've already encountered two book clubs that are just, like, friends vibing. Truly delightful! But still working on finding wherever the queer SFF/romance people are hiding.
Not a single parent has filed a book challenge in Palm Beach in two years.
The district just removed 1800 books anyway, because AI told them to.
There are many reasons that is unthinkable but let's not forget AI DOES NOT HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOOKS. IT CANNOT READ THEM. It just makes crap up!
Palm Beach pulled 1800+ titles from its school library collections because AI flagged them for review.
Media specialists and principals must sign attestation forms verifying their libraries are compliant with vague law.
None of this is normal.

We need indie publishers. We need our literary communities to thrive. Catapult was a place where I saw students become published writers, then authors, and sometimes teachers. Where I was lucky to work and collaborate, for a while, with some of the most brilliant & kind people in the business.
with sloppy (but convincing enough) AI vibeclones on the rise, developers now face a future in which a steady stream of pre-release videos, demos, and playtestsβthe only reliable way to promote and build communityβcould be their gameβs undoing
really excited to share that Magical Girl Burnout is a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection!!! big thank you to my favourite people in the world, librarians. #JLGSelection
the entire bioware situation is just another episode of how now, more than ever, YOU are important to the small indie things you enjoy getting somewhere. talk about the things you love. buy it physical if you can. make art. share links. don't just go 'everything i love is dying', that's how it does.
βCatapult management could not be reached for comment, it remains unclear what will happen to the 16 frontlist titles across Catapultβs four imprints that are slated for spring 2027.β
Shocked to learn that bored billionaires donβt answer the phone.

Assuming Counterpoint is included in the Catapult news, that means that 20% of this year's National Book Awards longlist for fiction was published by imprints that will no longer exist in their current form by the time of awards night.
I am so excited for this podcast!!! And produced by THE @gabyiori.bsky.social (fellow former union member, audio genius, and person of impeccable media taste)? I'm sat and I'm listening.
YIPPEE!!!! getting to produce this show with genius @cxorlando.bsky.social has been the best time ever and I'm so excited for y'all to hear what they've been cooking up. I laugh out loud minimum 6 times with every episode I edit!!!! you're all in for a TREAT.
I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.
I spoke about corporate consolidation and how sales teams across imprints are told which books to prioritize.
And also book coverage in general interest outlets -- where once these publications were tastemakers, now they want to talk about a book only once everyone's already talking about it.
GenAI is unethical across many axes including environmental, political, and because the industry is based on mass theft from authors and other creatives. It's also incredibly reputationally damaging for people who are being accused of its use. I don't think any publisher has the right to tarnish me.
I have called for the SoA to facilitate whistleblowing from staffers and authors alike, in the absence of voluntary transparency. I would also like publishers to explain why, if they believe GenAI use is either ethical and valuable, they aren't prepared to say how they're using it.
Apparently the Charter was so vague (just a bunch of fluffy aspirations) because publishers had indicated they wouldn't sign up to anything more specific (such as measurable and meaningful commitments to transparency and consent).
That will not do.
The Society of Authors has withdrawn from the ill-conceived concession to the dark side that was the "ethical GenAI" charter because of the mass and vocal outrage of authors.
Publishers need to be made afraid of this level of anger too.

Today I learned about "The Chronicles of Elsinore" of Bryn Mawr College in which: "Players would write movements, thoughts, and feelings of their characters into notebooks, where other could respond and interact with them."
29 notebooks, spanning from 1985 to 2002.
Incredible.
my partner, who works in tech, has been talking to me about this severe grab since itβs impacting their teams as well, and something you can do about itβcheck your website host and see what kinds of protections you can enable against AI crawling.
since California ballots are now out:
prop 40 is the billionaire tax, and you should vote yes to stick it to them
but both props 41 and 42 are designed to retroactively cancel the billionaire tax because theyβre afraid they canβt beat it at the ballot box
yes on 40, no on 41 and 42
