I genuinely could name basically any game or franchise from before 2010 and I think it'd be valid but I think the big stunner for me has ALWAYS been Simcity

what's everyone else's fab examples of once massively popular and influential landmark titles in especially western games from back in the day that have just been forgotten and abandoned completely now. mine is black and white

Genuinely can't wait to see what fucked up aesthetic wave the omnipresent Shitty GenAI Poster era causes GenAI squats the slot normies read as Highly Polished Art, so do we get an era of sketchy oddity? Design skills-heavy shapes / balance? Literal scribbles? What creates enough aesthetic distance?

I feel like game devs are a unique combination of all of “doing some of the hardest software engineering”, “wild west cowboy bullshit”, and “hitting themselves in the head with hammers for no reason”

At my first job, the boot flow had 3 functions "Start," "ReallyStartNow," and "StartForReals." I remember thinking "it's horrible, I'll never do that." In SquidGame: Unleashed, I needed asset loading for a task and addressables weren't online yet. Guess who shipped a load-bearing "DummyAssetLoader"

In a later meeting, after I publicly complained about engineers being bad at naming things, one of the leads asked "what's the worst named thing in the game?" and multiple people simultaneously said "DummyAssetLoader."

I think all the time about the fact that before I took my current job, I had three offers in hand, and now only my present studio out of the three exists anymore. The other two are completely shut down. This studio has also had layoffs! I just did not get hit on either occasion they happened.
