The October runs for dynamical El Niño models are now all out, and its a mixed bag. Some revise the event downward, some upward, but on average its still expected to peak at ~4C, albeit with the peak more likely to occur in December than November:

Fires in France have now burned over 91,000 acres, by far the most of any year since the satellite record started in 2006. Current area burned is about 34x larger than this date in a typical (median) year:

Why do some plants open their stomata at high temperatures? Our new paper shows that this behaviour is optimal, and a crucial thermoregulation strategy. 🍃 However, this only emerges when the leaf energy balance is fully integrated in the optimisation. This is missing from global models at present!

Something deeply troubling & shocking is happening at Exeter University*, where a mass cull of staff is planned, even though it's in surplus. No good justifications given. @jamesgdyke.info provides the details: www.technosphere.earth/the-bonfire-... *Disclosure: I have a Visiting Fellowship here. +🧵

Excellent open letter from the Exeter Lib Dems to the university about the proposed cuts. Really good to see us standing up for Unis as part of our community

Studied at Exeter for my BA/MA (History & Classics depts). Top of the line teaching and research, interlinked. Exeter remains one of the most productive UK universities in my own fields (early modern, social, maritime history). If Humanities here is up for cuts then what university is NOT at risk?

'What is perhaps remarkable about the Exeter cuts is that they are targeted at some of the university’s most successful departments, many of which turn over a profit even after they have made enormous and increasing contributions to the central university budget.' Read, rage and weep.

johnheathershaw.substack.comThe Crisis in Britain’s UniversitiesThe cuts that have been proposed at the University of Exeter demonstrates the crisis of purpose in Britain’s universities. Should not universities also be places to prepare for "eternal dwellings"?

Sad indication of our times one of the best accounts on X correcting the rampant climate misinformation has been suspended due to mass reporting by deniers.

If a strong El Niño develops in 2026 (quite likely now), the main effects on global temps will be in 2027. This is because there is historically a lag of about three months between when El Niño peaks (generally in Nov/Dec) and when the biggest effect occurs:

🚨BREAKING🚨 The most recent RELATIVE Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) forecast shows we could be facing the strongest El Niño in observed history!! This could lead to dystopian global climate change impacts over the next 1.5 years. No one is prepared.

This is the critical problem. By relying on US tech and trade we are almost totally trapped as a vassal of the US. UK plus Europe needs to rapidly start separating itself from the US and plan for the long term without them.

In a new article over at Carbon Brief, I explore why the past three years – 2023, 2024, and 2025 – have been exceptionally warm. The main culprits turn out to be a combination of El Nino and internal variability, declining aerosols, and a strong solar cycle: www.carbonbrief.org/...

The true question right now is whether you believe in the moral character of the British public. If you do, you'll want to have the fight with Reform. You'll believe that the public will hate the idea of breaking up families, spying on & deporting people who've worked here for years.

Farage's announcement on Indefinite Leave to Remain is a travesty. This will affect me personally. My wife of the past 15 years has lived and worked in the UK and paid her taxes all that time.

Because Japan doesn't allow dual citizenship & still has elderly parents in Japan she has chosen to stay a Japanese citizen. On top of that I'm severely disabled by long-term illness & she is my only carer and I have very little other family. Ending ILR would leave us in a very difficult situation

To me the Tony Blair institute said quite a few reasonable things but the emphasis on removal over "short-term" emissions cuts, is at best bad choice of words or worst an unrealistic "have your cake and eat it" fantasy.

Agree Tom, I can think of cases where admin support roles were meant to reduce academics workload but instead increased it. Not all admin is bad though, put talented people in the right roles and it can be of great benefit but sadly not always the case.
