There’s two kinds of prog rock: prog rock that makes you smart, and prog rock that makes you stupid. And you can’t tell the difference until it’s too late, and the polarities are reversing all the time

Look what I got at the grocery store where it was on extreme clearance for some reason

I listen to the Wilco a lot more these days, but in actual factual 2001 I absolutely loved Vespertine, and apparently that's my voting criteria here.

If I get EU status back while the UK stays Brexited...

Three-byline alert: 🚨 “.. Carney has even suggested Canada take on a new title: ‘Associate Member of the European Union.’ .. The EU, not known for its flexible enforcement of membership rules, is open to the idea ..” @wsj.com www.wsj.com/world/europe...

By chance bought a Pamela Branch mystery in Lucca recently, as my wife read a Christianna Brand. Otherwise, I don't think I'd have twigged that Brand's detective is seemingly reading a crime novel written by Branch's character. Given they were friends it tracks, though.

We have just had proper rain here for the first time since June - and I have just come to realise that the purpose of Test cricket as a ritual in England is TO MAKE IT RAIN IN THE SUMMER. We have angered the gods with The Hundred and we must return to the old ways.

Ghost houses. The houses on Pape just north of the tracks have been expropriated by Metrolinx due to Ontario Line construction. They leave the lights on, so you can see into the abandoned houses at night. Still with bits of their former lives sometimes.

I'm a member of two different cricket club group chats trying to figure out if they're going to be able to keep playing through the eclipse this evening or how many overs they might lose to light.

I really like Cake; I am grateful that I can just vote for them without having to defend this notion at any sort of length.

CANADIAN TRAIN ETIQUETTE UPDATE: the woman opposite me has just taken a phone call and said 'I can't really talk on the train, so you just tell me things and I'll keep going mmm-hmm.'

Mark Watson@watsoncomedian.bsky.social

I'm on the train from Montréal to Toronto. There's just been a reminder that it is MANDATORY to use headphones when watching video. I can't believe this guys have resorted to legislation, rather than our system of having 75% of the carriage sit in murderous, futile rage.

If we're doing 100 years, I guess... armoured car driver, railway engineer, or various kinds of company clerk?

Revan@revan.eurosky.social

Enough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?

Turns out if you're in power you can do things

Burnham announces: 1. Casey will bring forward her review by a year to summer 2027. He wants it to focus on creating a National Care Service that is ‘highly integrated’ with the NHS. 2. He will look at improving pay and progression of social care workforce. 3. Cross party talks to begin today.

That Bouie is the exception when it comes to American commentators who grasp how deep the distrust of the US now is among Canadians is telling about how much this problem in America is about more than Trump

Just realised that the King must feel the same sense of 'well, it's not what I would pick but it makes me remember my childhood' about this kind of interior as I do about, say, woodchip wallpaper.

It's the absolute confidence in the tech that these chancers have that gets me. Ten minutes would establish that it's not ready for use!

LOL just reading through comments from the copy-editor and, well, let's just say I'm not convinced that the copy-editor has really been doing much actual reading of my text here with these queries.. Screenshot of my paragraph for context here... Snort.

One of my colleagues is doing a presentation on how great AI is, and to prove the point he got AI to create the slides for him, and he asked AI to save the presentation and I think you can all guess where this is going... Anyway, we've all learned an important lesson about using AI.

I well recall the online debates where the majority of debaters opined that zero traffic deaths is an utopian goal and would require methods that would kill Helsinki, if not bring about totalitarian communism

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas and city center in 2021.”

I remember a curator at the National Museum in Dublin telling me about the storage space wasted on the vast amounts of 1916-related junk they received from the public. The Cricket Bat That Died For Ireland was a favourite (it was in a shop window and got a bullet through it.)

I'm old enough to have occasionally caught one of these PCCs on the 506 on my way to school, which makes me feel 100 years old.

Me as an undergraduate: 'I really think that we shouldn't be so quick to assume that these ridiculous claims about how the next village over was meeting with devils were read as truth not fairytale' Me, now: 'They 100 per cent believed people in the next village were meeting with devils'
