I wish more people understood that using AI and being generally in favor of a technology does not equate to supporting any and all usage/implementation of that technology. We all already understand this about computers, the internet, software, cameras, GPS, pharma, etc.

the Internet Archive thing is an example of the fascinating trend recently where people consuming products they’re not paying for seem to believe they also have the right to dictate how much human labor is spent producing them.

I've seen people say not to use the free Adobe alternatives springing up because they're "vibe coded." I promise you engineers at Adobe are using AI too! Embrace the fact that this shift in power dynamics means you can reduce your reliance on highly extractive companies!

If you're anti-AI, do you think it's a good thing that monopolists are capturing AI technology l, restricting it via regulation, and banning open source and free models? In a choice between proliferation or servitude, I choose proliferation.

Cartoon wolves used to be horny for human women. But now human women are horny for cartoon wolves. The reason? Woke.

if you have 100,000 followers on bluesky, you need to understand that quote dunking a small account that didn’t do anything to you (especially when it’s a trans person) is effectively like controlling the eye of sauron and causing your horde of minions to chase after whatever you point it at

I see people putting AI in the same bucket as NFTs (speculative technology that will go away when the bubble pops), but I think the internet is the better comp. Sure there's some early bubble-y activity, but the underlying technology is real it's going to dramatically change things.

I keep expecting AI progress to plateau, but with the opus 5.5 release it seems clear that is not happening.

Increasingly concerned re: people offloading vital cognitive processes by using GIF replies. Expressing snark with words is a core part of being human, don't let some GIF picker widget a startup preloaded with clips of mid range TV shows take that from you!

realizing i never posted it here….but too long have we been limited by the 2-dimensional political alignment chart. i think by using my new tool we can truly map another person's politics. here it is: The Ideology Cube

ice cold take: i feel like a lot of p(doom) scare is thinly veiled p(capitalism is unsustainable) not saying the risks aren't real; just that a lot of the time you look under the mask and it's "we could be forced to cut profit margins 😱 invest in infrastructure 😱 redistribute wealth 😱"

a lot of our culture is misanthropic in the wrong direction; where instead of being vexed and disappointed by the unrealized potential of humanity, people believe that the potential isn't there. in a paradoxical sense this turns out to be a lesser condemnation: it lets humans off the hook

Australian claims we need to destroy fair use like they arent one vote away from being required a pap smear of their anus every time they want to post on the internet

Demon King of the New Platform@clothedvillainy.bsky.social

Australia had an interesting example of queer art being used transformatively (in the legal sense) to create homophobic political content. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that consent should be obtained before using the creations of others.

"You need to ask permission of every artist whose work you're transforming" is how we went from hip hop with heavy sampling being a genre anyone could make music in to something that you need increasingly exploitative label deals for

quinn the stampede reposted

i am very sick and tired of people bringing up "consent" as a reason for why transformative works should be disallowed. yes even when the transformative works involve lots of complicated machine statistics. firstly; consent is for sex and risky activities, not "am i allowed to use bits of your work"

The ag lobby really, really, really, really, really, really, really wants you to think AI is the reason reservoirs are going empty. It's not. It's agriculture.

We have data on this. The blue is all the non-ag human use:

Okay using my monthly allowance of one quote dunk on this. This is vibes-based jurisprudence that puts the Candyland fantasy of what position OP feels authors oughta hold in society over the reality that the law is a blunt instrument, and IP is used mostly to bludgeon artists into poverty.

Big Joel@bigjoel.bsky.social

i still just really feel like AI stuff is basically illegal. like I don't think a good faith interpretation of "fair use" entails vacuuming up everyone's intellectual property to build your chat bot. that sounds wrong to me

"but to me [AI] does seem totally at odds with a capitalist society where IP is protected" Waow! (based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based based)

Big Joel@bigjoel.bsky.social

there are increasingly common arguments against AI that are like "it will destroy the world, we are inventing skynet" and idk about all of that. but to me it does seem totally at odds with a capitalist society where IP is protected

quinn the stampede reposted

I think this stuff is really scary and much scarier than the fake arguments. We will not solve it on the individual morality level. Only online jackasses can believe that cancer patients should be bullied for caring more about staying alive than their privacy purity.

conputer dipshit@davidcrespo.bsky.social

the way they get you is that it's not a trick. more data really does make it better. all your chats, email, records, documents. this is why it's such a mistake to focus on the errors they make this week. you need an argument that's persuasive even if it works, because it absolutely will work

this is why the stochastic parrot and imminent implosion critiques are so poorly suited to the moment: the natural conclusion from both is that we don't need to theorize this surveillance dystopia or resist it

conputer dipshit@davidcrespo.bsky.social

none of this is meant as an argument that LLMs are not dangerous or destabilizing or whatever. I actually think the stochastic parrot line of critique undermines the claim that they are dangerous. they're much more dangerous if they are reliable!
