UK offering Freedom of Movement would be the game changer for conversations with the EU, one of the trio of people, pounds and positivity I identified earlier this year as crucial to any significant move to removing barriers.

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

Prime Minister Andy Burnham says he wants a more 'honest conversation' about freedom of movement, suggesting it could work better than post-Brexit immigration has. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

"Why do the racists insist on joining our party?" weeps Reform UK, as Reform UK hosts a noted racist

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

Reform UK Oxford will host a talk in November criticising "DEI" by the Nathan Cofnas, who describes his belief in + commitment to biological racism as "race realism", writing "in a meritocracy, blacks would disappear from almost all high-profile positions outside of sports and entertainment”.

Economically left, votes for Nigel Farage. Immigration is going up a lot in their heads

British Voter@britishvoter.bsky.social

I'm a White English Catholic woman from Islington South and Finsbury, in my seventies. My top issue is immigration. In 2024 I voted Reform UK. Today I still would.

If you're not familiar with the alcohol consumption by decile chart, it's a real eye opening look at what being a hardcore alcoholic is like

Regime Accountant, CPA ☠️🎢@regimecpa.bsky.social

Last time I told people on here how much craft beer I drank when I was an alcoholic with an expense account, people reacted with disgust.

Somebody said "They voted for racism and got poverty" The thing is... social scientists and economists have been saying for the last 50 years Racism is austerity

Can you revive a zombie river? Our cities are full of rivers that have been buried in concrete after industrial pollution filled them with filth. But there's a global drive to bring them back: to "daylight" these forgotten rivers. I had a lovely day out in Sheffield today, seeing it actually happen.

Another on the list of "things that are obvious from the evidence yet ignored" is "current immigration policy will deliver a great big hole in future budgets". The OBR currently assumes net migration bottoms out at 200k then rises. That isn't going to happen

Rob Ford@robfordmancs.bsky.social

Yes indeed, as is often the case. See also: “Labour are losing more votes to the left than the right”, “Kemi is more popular but the Tories are not”, and “Most people really dislike Nigel Farage” - all as obvious as the Pope’s confessional status, yet all routinely missed or ignored.

I'm deep down the rabbit hole on FROGFISH, 60 species of anglerfish in family Antennariidae. They are deeply, utterly WEIRD & MARVELOUS. Most walk on modified fins. Others use jet propulsion. Some are capable of air-breathing. Some are "hairy", others blend perfectly in sargassum.

A lot of rich guys want you to think that the bar on the right is always going to be bigger than the bar on the left.

James Medlock@jdcmedlock.bsky.social

I'm taking my "Norway's wealth tax didn't reduce tax revenue" victory lap.

Zack Polanski getting asked if he'll stand down after one election when Nigel Farage lost like ten in a row. Fucking ridiculous media environment.

I'm sorry if this is obvious but the Tory proposal to exempt family homes completely from IHT will lead to 1] pensioners buying the biggest houses they possibly can 2] pensioners refusing to downsize which can only be bad news for younger families trying to buy family homes

Let's explore the IceCube Neutrino Observatory! Constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica, it embeds ~5,800 ultra-sensitive light detectors (DOMs) in 90 strings through 1 cubic km of ultra-clear glacier ice sitting at very nearly the precise geographic South Pole.

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

What is the IceCube neutrino observatory? Neutrinos are elusive particles that rarely interact, but can create flashes of light when they do. Most neutrino detectors are giant water tanks surrounded by light detectors. IceCube is kilometer-long strings of detectors embedded in the Antarctic ice.

Democratic vote on who the bad things should happen to bsky.app/profile/head...

Headquarters@headquartersnews.bsky.social

Sam Altman: We believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology. I do think the lighter touch regulatory stance we advocate for comes with an accepting of the fact that some bad things are going to happen.

There is also an argument that continually raising the 0% tax threshold removes people from paying into the state and loses the sense of contribution. Everyone should pay in, and tax thresholds should be smoothed out, but there should be subsidies for those who need support.

Ulrike Franke@rikefranke.eu

Basically all European states have financial issues and basically all are discussing (further) restricting social services/support/etc for the wealthier. See UK re childcare above £100 000. I totally get it. However: we need to acknowledge that this is creating a social contract problem.

Let asylum seekers work: it'll fix a few problems in our labour market, save taxpayers some cash and mean we don't need giant asylum sites like MOD Bicester. Or we could keep being performatively awful to asylum seekers for no benefit.

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

I really don't think that what people want is more expensive takeaway and more listless men hanging around with nothing to do while their asylum claims are processed:

I don’t think people appreciate just how precariously the butterfly is balanced on the wheel here. The current PM is promising Hope and Change at the top of a malignant party and a political/media system that is non-negotiable bent on scything benefit cuts, militarism and relentless extraction.

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

The press have decided to reimpose the two party model and unfortunately, that requires “pretending to believe Kemi Badenoch is doing a good job”. Which is pretty bad, given she’s a disastrously online wacko.
