NEW: My midterms cheat sheet features 670+ races—up and down the ballot, & why they matter. Now it's in PDF, printable form! Save it, print it, give it to your kids to color the Senate map, & use it your worksheet on election night. Find it here: boltsmag.org/whats-on-the...

As we approach the midterms, remember that the Alt National Park Service is a merch sales operation claiming without evidence to be a group of federal employees, and is not a genuine source of news about elections of any kind. Please get your election info from a local, reputable source.

I feel obliged to once again reiterate that lay offs and closures are not a reaction to the economy, but a failure of leadership. Each wave of closures and layoffs should be looked upon as a consequence of greed and incompetence. If you can't keep your people employed, you are bad at your job.

A lot of things lining up right now. - Potential Dem wave election. - This ad going to close race states. - Vivek's ad against Acton defusing the "trans issues won this election" claim preemptively. - Talarico not supporting a trans sports ban - Polls showing anti-trans ads backfiring Good stuff.

Democratic-aligned group Progress Action Fund has released a PRO-trans ad, attacking Republicans for being creepy in bathrooms. It will run in Texas and Ohio, and is expected to reach millions. You have to see the ad itself. Subscribe to support our journalism.

this is reminiscent of the moral panic against trans youth, which started out on blogs for parents who didn't want to believe their own kids were trans. some of those parents went on to write books, create organizations, & position themselves "experts" on the issue

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

As far as I can tell, literally every article on this quotes the same "expert" — a former estranged father who has an entire blog dedicated to absolving parents of any responsibility. He also sells $995 "consultations" where he will blame your kids for cutting you off.

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

Star Wars Galactic Racer having takedowns like Burnout is cool but I gotta turn off the cutaways because this game is too fast for them to spin the camera for them. Glad they have it as a toggle.

Look I don’t think voting alone fixes everything. No one action will. But it‘s one of many tools and I think we‘re doing ourselves a disservice not to use *every* tool available. Please make a plan to vote early or vote Nov 3rd and take a few minutes to read up on your local races and issues.

Thank you to everyone who stood with me over the years. It’s been a scary journey but I have always been grounded in my work and ability to provide exemplary service to my constituents. Trump and his administration have been after me since I arrived in Congress.

BREAKING WaPo: Trump officials scrutinized Rep. Ilhan Omar in 2019. They didn't find citizenship issues.
The earlier review of Omar's immigration records looked at many of the same issues being investigated now.

It’s such a minor thing, relatively speaking. But it still makes me furious. I saw a brief clip of that woman speaking. (Against my will, obvs.) And literally every word she said was about the upcoming campaign, and thus a violation of the Hatch Act. All of it against the law. This actually matters.

This is straight up, plain and simple authoritarianism. This is the canonical impeachable offense

Rep. Delia C. Ramirez has introduced a bill that would abolish not just ICE, but the DHS altogether, repealing the 2002 law establishing the agency and replacing it with one focused on protecting civil and human rights.

Do we really need to explain to people that it is really, REALLY important to read to young children? Like, you, personally, need to read to your child - your voice, your face, your hand gestures, your lap, your arms, your closeness. What kind of parent doesn't know this in their bones?

Most of the commentary about this concentrates on how it's just an asshole move. And it definitely is. But it's also a violation of ADA

context. sentiment. inferences. People seriously cannot do these things anymore. That’s why they angrily demand you spell out every joke, every reference, super duper promise you mean something only this one prescribed way. They cannot do it for themselves or tolerate the any ambiguity.

Great thread and just want to highlight how important it is for kids to *finish* books. A lesson which sticks with me from my undergrad (K-8 English teacher) is that if you've got a baby/toddler and you're reading a picture book to them, that even if they get bored, wriggle, etc...

Graphic novels are great for reluctant readers! They're a low-pressure, fun entry point to reading! Reading - and finishing! - a graphic novel can help readers build confidence and curiosity. I've heard from SO many voracious readers who found their way into reading all KINDS of books through GNs.

Imagine a room of thirty readers, and picture the kid who is struggling with a chapter book over a month as their peers finish book after book. Of the MANY strengths of graphic novels, being able to provide a reading experience that can meet a wider range of reader can be life changing.

This is why I also squirm when I hear a parent, librarian, or teacher say GN aren't books. Because kids are always listening and with our literacy rates as low as they are, everyone has a responsibility to make sure the kids in their life see themselves as readers.

That it is beneficial to skip to the end of the book, read/makeup the ending, and close the back cover. For adult readers (and even many teenage ones) I'll definitely encourage dropping a book here and there. But the act of finishing books helps build ritual and confidence around reading.
