Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

This is so unabashedly bigoted that it would be completely unacceptable on any other network and probably result in an on-air apology. But also it's very stupid? You want to subvert America so you … join the Senate? One of the least functional entities in America? OK. bsky.app/profile/atru...

(I do wonder, though, if the current round of escalation --- sanctioning the Court as an institution, rather than individual judges, in the context of the broader campaign to "dismantle" the ICC, might negatively polarize some Dems to support the Court more strongly...)

This paper (published last year in @gsqjournal.bsky.social) examines why some Dems joined a 2020 letter calling for executive action against the ICC after the authorization of the Afghanistan investigation (which, until subsequently deprioritized, included allegations of war crimes by US nationals)

MP Broache@mbroache.bsky.social

Notably, while the Trump administration is escalating its anti-#ICC campaign, opposition to the Court has historically been bipartisan, with Congressional Dems joining prior statements (and votes) against the ICC, cf. this paper co-authored w/ @kylereed.bsky.social academic.oup.com/isagsq/artic...

Congrats to every institution, pundit, etc. that completely capitulated to this guy after he won a narrow popular vote plurality against an opponent from the incumbent party who entered the race 100 days before the election and in the context of a worldwide backlash against incumbents

I am personally not sure what Trump's approval rating floor is, but it's definitely lower than pundits were predicting in early 2025. It is a possibility that he never gets above the mid-30s again (among all adults) fiftyplusone.news/polls/approv...

On October 9, the United States government sanctioned the International Criminal Court, citing ICC jurisdiction over crimes by US nationals abroad. This is an unprecedented assault on global justice and the rule of law. Read HRW's statement: https://bit.ly/4zuGQqh

(There's a long list of crimes with elements on the territory of ICC States Parties that US officials have committed, though it would obviously depend on other States Parties to make a referral...)

Notable that the joint statement, while offering rhetoric support, is completely silent on any measures to help the #ICC. Hopefully that is coming. These states are not powerless. The EU, UK and Canada all have the ability to invoke measures to block the impact of U.S. sanctions.

actually . . . wow! navi pillay, one of the most prominent human rights leaders of our time, former UN high commissioner for human rights . . . so richly deserved. three cheers!

Rubio is obviously wrong. But this is the first time the ASP is mentioned as a reason. Presumably it’s inaction to “constrain” the Court. It’s a golden opportunity for the ASP to react in the strongest terms, including an emergency Bureau and ASP meeting. Rebut Rubio. Act now.

Sergey Vasiliev@sevslv.bsky.social

From the Thursday memo: "The ICC has acted wildly outside of its purported mandate, unchecked by fundamental principles of international law, and apparently unconstrained by the ASP, as evidenced by its increasingly activist and inappropriate approach towards heads of State."
