Important message for anyone who doesn't want to spend all their time online being annoyed. That's not a life. No one wants that.

Ursula K. Le Guin Bot@leguinbot.bsky.social

A hero whose heroism consists of killing people is uninteresting to me, and I detest the hormonal war orgies of our visual media, the mechanical slaughter of endless battalions of black-clad, yellow-toothed, red-eyed demons.

It is, today, not the 13th anniversary of the publication of Steven Morrissey’s autobiography (it had been out for ten days) but something much better: the 13th anniversary of the Sunday Times publishing A. A. Gill’s merciless mauling of it—a review which went on to win Hatchet Job of the Year

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

Love this. One of her best loved and most enduring short stories is The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. A place name which is just Salem, O. (Oregon), backwards.

Ursula K. Le Guin Bot@leguinbot.bsky.social

“Where do you get your ideas from, Ms Le Guin?” From forgetting Dostoyevsky and reading road signs backwards, naturally. Where else?

It's so funny seeing the press do a whole "But is the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street a good thing?" thing. Pedestriaisation ALWAYS works. Always. Bit of a bump when it switches and then, almost immediately, life/commerce roars into the fill the gaps left by diesel fumes. Love this for London

Solar panels: they're good, stick 'em on your roof! Make a little shady garden spot out of them! Roll on when the UK plug in solar can combine with a battery, cut the red tape around leaseholders hanging them off balconies, just get on with it. www.bbc.co.uk/future/artic...

Transphobia just one of a whole collection of phobias, study finds. Terfs are also misogynists shocker. Also often racist and xenophobic. Almost as if there's a link.

gotta say hats off to all the writers pretending to do profiles of Silicon Valley CEOs just so they can add that one same paragraph, every single time, that demonstrates they're all insane freaks who do not know or like their own kids.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

A nation succeeding at developing an industry isn’t stealing anything. But what do I know? I’m not an expert like this pampered, corrupt dementia patient running a money-laundering operation while pretending to be a big, tough builder.

Trump: "Look, if we had smart presidents, the Taiwan problem with China wouldn't exist. Nobody would care. They stole our chip business. All of it. 100 percent."

The thing about Donald Trump is that he is an absolute god tier loser snowflake who collapses emotionally whenever some says something nasty about him. He is the epitome of a weak, pathetic, sad sack loser

Hard to put into words the knowledge that the Brazilian elections are globally consequential in a way that equals the importance of the American ones, and the ruling class in the enlightened liberal west all actively root for the laughably comic book ecocidal villains to win.

High streets are an important part of modern Britain. It's where afternoon drinkers go to get interviewed by news reporters for their views about immigration.

James Ball@jamesrball.com

The British syndrome, summarised: 78% of us say our high streets are important to us. But only 28% of us actually use their local high street even once a week – and only 53% of people said they used theirs *once a month*. We won't use it, and we won't lose it.

💯The case for democracy is not that voters are always right, or wise, or good. It's that they can correct their mistakes. That's why it's so dangerous to have billionaires controlling the media or regulating the flow of information. It shuts down the immune system of democracy.

Rob Ford@robfordmancs.bsky.social

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.
