On 12 April 1948, Eleanor Roosevelt wanted to add #freedom of movement – ‘without red tape of any kind’ – to her husband’s Four Freedoms. Yet, a few months later, Art 13 of the Universal Declaration, which she was chairing the drafting of, guaranteed only the right to leave a country. #HumanRights

If possible, the Trump admin is having a worse year geopolitically than Putin. They've trashed their influence by alienating old allies and failing to keep (Hungary) or gain (Brazil) new ones. But at least the Kremlin and the White House have each other.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cmgelnrd4r3jt

With the defeat of Orban and Vucic, the bipartisan backlash against the Trump administration's alignment with the Kremlin over NATO allies and Ukraine, and the failure of Russia's attempt to advance on the battlefield, Putin's not having his best year. www.rferl.org/a/serbia-vot...

Incredible what Brazil did tonight, a lesson to many supposedly mature democracies. When confronted with the possibility of having back in power those who had already shown their authoritarian colors, the Brazilian people, surprisingly and beautifully, said no.

Rupert Lowe of Restore Britain says the electoral success of his political party would "inevitably" lead to civil unrest and rioting. His argument is increasingly that civil conflict has become unavoidable + absolutely necessary (if still partly regrettable + somewhat to be blamed on opponents)

No one seems to care, but these were the UK's submissions about hospital use in I v UK in *2002*. I get that the UKSC is big on reading ECtHR jurisprudence as narrowly as possible, but it really does strain credulity to think there is no Art 8 violation .

Far too often the bench is comprised of people in their 60s making decisions about parents in their 30s who have children under 10. The dynamic is one of grandparents making decisions about grandchildren: very different from what it should be.

Here’s another with no explicit right to access LPM material. Does absence of the usual LPM constraint mean it is potentially in scope? (I think so) Or can a public body acting contrary to firm legal advice IRL covert surveillance hide that in an inspection or investigation under cover of LPP?

I’m serious about this. If a plan, to obstruct fans’ enjoyment of 1 football game by switching off floodlights at a match for £ gain for self & others, sufficed to convict D of common law public nuisance & get a 4 year sentence, then on its face this clearly warrants police attention (RvOng CrA2001)

Ms Anfield Park@msanfieldpark.bsky.social

Fraudulent or not, I’d personally welcome a police investigation in to alleged public nuisance by systematic & long term obstruction of the right of millions of football fans & their clubs to enjoy football within the FFP rules, resulting in serious distress, annoyance & loss of amenity etc to many.

Both the report & the so called comprehensive equalities impact assessment, stated to be authored by a senior lawyer, can be viewed here. Anybody here think this could survive a judicial review? FWIW I don’t. Let’s hope it’s tested, this is a truly awful precedent & not just for asylum seekers.

Have you read the council report? The unattributed legal implications para recites s17 Crime and Disorder Act 1988 as underpinning the legality. But s17 is not a stand alone function; it’s a “due regard” duty triggered in the exercise of “its various functions” - so, which function(s) are in play?

Tonight’s fascist attack on an RNLI lifeboat is the result of years of stochastic terrorism directed at asylum-seekers by mainstream politicians and media. Repeated high profile claims that “we must stop these people!”. The fascists are simply following through on that rhetoric.

Emma Yeomans@yeomans.bsky.social

Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

He could have quite explicitly stated that they don't, because they don't. This isn't an area to go "oh people think". We have the evidence. They just don't. If you want to claim to be a progressive, liberal, party, you have to actually challenge right wing, predominantly, lies and scare mongering.

Ed Davey, speaking later on the BBC, is invited about three times by Laura Kuenssberg to say that asylum seekers do not pose a greater proportional threat to women than men in general. He does not.

I had no idea of this extraordinary episode. I reminds us of how easily people can be declared "illegal" or "immigrant" rather than native. These are not natural kinds, but administrative categories. Striking parallels with the Windrush scandal. Of interest to all, but tagging @spe07.bsky.social

Might I, as someone with a little legal expertise on this, simply note two things: (1) Having the law on the books and having that law enforced and put into operation by police are two very separate matters. There was almost certainly ‘enough’ law to deal with what took place in Dover

An RNLI lifeboat guy here, and as I’ve been saying for many years now: why is it that the public have been subjected to hate campaigns against hated enemies including rescue services, Stonewall, Amnesty International, the left of the Labour Party, the National Trust, the Proms and Match of the Day?

Ms Anfield Park reposted

Labour need to be clear. Neither the thugs at Dover nor the mobs at Portsmouth have ‘legitimate concerns’. They’re racist hate-driven violent thugs.

Ms Anfield Park reposted

I simply do not understand what's going on in Labour that renders its leaders incapable of finding a TV camera and speaking out against street violence. Even if you assume they agree about immigration, violence is wrong, unpopular AND against the interests of any even vaguely left wing govt.

Ms Anfield Park reposted

I’m flat out begging politicians to stop trying to win votes with a little light xenophobia. All you do is feed the racists without ever satiating them. Stop legitimizing hate
