This article quotes a sociology professor, a lawyer, and an architect who reject the notion that housing prices are set by supply and demand and do not believe that building more homes reduces rents. It is the housing policy equivalent of platforming climate change deniers.

sacbee.comWould building housing reduce poverty in California? Sacramento-area experts splitA recent study argued that building housing could lower state’s poverty rate, currently the second-highest in the U.S. behind Louisiana.

not to be flippant but I think that almost all of these people have severe personality disorders and it’s merely a result of circumstance that they’re here instead of storming the capitol on Jan 6th

Pro-Palestinian protesters gather outside City Hall to call out Mayor Zohran Mamdani for what they see as his betrayal of the movement. "Mayor Mamdani, you can't hide we charge you with genocide" was a chant that just rang out.

Another possibility is that humans lie in the "low samples, high compute" quadrant that research hasn't really explored. Until recently a breakthrough there wouldn't have had much effect on LLMs because we had samples, but now with RL it would.

There's roughly 4 buckets of school districts in California: 1. High poverty ones with lots of ESL kids 2. Wealthy ones, but not wealthy enough to be self sufficient 3. Wealthy ones that are self sufficient (aka Basic Aid) 4. Everyone else

I have a few: 1) The night sky. Light pollution has fundamentally changed our experience of the stars. 2) Actual quiet - no distant traffic or electrical lines. 3) Music and the spoken word. We’ve been raised in literate and now audiovisual cultures; that’s a recent innovation. 4) Memory.

Happy SpaceX IPO day! As a fun game, I randomly selected 10 of Elon's 50 most recent tweets, as well as 10/50 of his tweets 10 years ago and shuffled them together. Can YOU tell the difference between Elon today and Elon from way back then?

gatekeeping who can and cannot be a “real New Yorker” is some absolute loser behavior and goes against the very ethos of New York City. and the cherry on top is that JLo lives in LA now

It is funny but anyone who knows the history of the state would know this isn't all that surprising. We are pretty contradictory in many ways. Not to speak on the candidates individual ability to govern effectively.

Quantian@quantian.bsky.social

It’s legitimately a great bit that despite being the wokest and most diverse state in the nation California exclusively elects rich middle-aged white guys with salt and pepper hair straight out of central casting as governor.

NASA isn't why the US doesn't have universal healthcare, or a social safety net. The US doesn't have those things because politicians with the power to provide them choose specifically not to (with varying levels of support from voters). Enthusiasm for human spaceflight doesn't drive that choice.

i think powell's response here is a demonstration of the folly of the idea that democratic accountability requires presidential control. what if the president is not acting in the public interest? you want independent agencies to be able to push back and pursue their *congressional mandate*

Powell, showing more guts than almost any GOP legislators: "The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Fed setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President." www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/s...

Poverty does not make you more noble, nor does wealth make you smarter. This is the heart of the human condition, you have a lifetime to grow and change. Never underestimate where that can lead.

Their messaging is so fucking incoherent. Maduro was an illegitimate leader who lost in 2024, which is why we're replacing him with his VP instead of the person who won in 2024. We did this to stop fentanyl, which is why he's indicted for cocaine. We're also occupying Venezuela via Zoom call.

One of my more controversial opinions is that the US needs to significantly raise taxes to the tune of a couple % of GDP right now, even before any expansive social democratic reforms, and that means you—yes you, dear highly educated professional—will need to pay up, not just nebulous billionaires.

what frustrates me is how ahistorical it is it makes me think of the magnificent Execution of Torrijos painting: liberal soldiers coming to terms with their imminent execution for fighting against absolutist monarchy. liberalism cannot be taken for granted, it is something we must fight for

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy. I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.

Obama and Biden are not responsible for the actions of the GOP or outbursts of right-wing violence. They are, however, fully implicated in the failure to understand what the American right was becoming and accepting the consequences for addressing it honestly and forcefully.

B Swift@baswift2024.bsky.social

Way to point the blame to Obama and Biden since both of them worked with the Constitution and the rule of law. Do better. 🙄

The Sam Seder vs Ezra Klein debate is fascinating to me, more than most of the appearances in his book tour, because it demonstrates how American progressives claim to have ideas about “Class Politics” but when you press them on it it’s no more sophisticated than “Corporations vs The People”
