Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

This stopped me in my tracks. An independent study by @qmul.bsky.social has found that after ULEZ was introduced, children’s lungs grew faster in Central London and have now caught up with children outside of the capital. Incredible.

Air pollution stunts children’s lung growth. New Queen Mary research found that improvements in air quality after the introduction of London’s ULEZ are associated with accelerated lung growth in children. Read more: shorturl.at/Jx86o

This is a dreadful development in our politics, which is bound to see dodgy & illegal lobbying now go unnoticed. And I say this as someone who, 20 years ago, was included in the register of MPs’ staff interests, when I worked for an MP. I never begrudged my inclusion on the register.

There's been a real failure on the part of progressive leaders this summer to link the weather and Net Zero in the public mind. Most people get it, but the consensus is crumbling and it would be useful to reinforce it.

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

I know he has a lot on, but in the midst of a ferocious drought, fires, heat events and severe threats to food production, it would be quite edifying to hear Andy Burnham mention climate breakdown.

Following my last Substack piece on the demise of RCP 8.5, the implausible scenario that has underpinned climate science for two decades, I've been asked about sea level rise and tipping points. Here goes with a long, wonky post! mliebreich.substack.com/p/the-troubl...

When I walked past one hour ago petrol cost £151.9. Delighted to have finally beaten my longstanding inflation PB of 82% in 2 weeks. Roll over Brazil, Trump’s hyperinflation is gonna do you

The last month of US attacks on Iran proves beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump is mad & bad (old news, I know), but it also gives the lie to the idea that he has a skilled if evil group of advisers. What a bunch of amateur morons to take on Iran and not know that the global economy would be rocked

To be fair to any asylum seekers who did try to get to Scotland in a small boat: what better proof that they are right for Scotland that they will brave the cold of the Firth of Forth? Should be a more generalised nationality test!

Incredibly, no-one on Nigel Farage’s team has got round to deleting this post. It’s still live as Robert Jenrick gives his big defection speech.

My theory on this is because this COULD become a trigger moment for a severe tightening of political freedoms in US, think Reichstag Fire. It is not the significance of the event itself but how it is then used by malevolent actors. Be alert, not afraid!
