Under first-past-the-post voting, the most profitable game-theoretic move is to increase the polarization of the electorate. The essential problem with ranked-choice voting is that it _preserves_ those incentives, due to a feature called the "center squeeze" effect. 2/

its funny bc like, makes total sense from the perspective of the model. like it exists in a world of words where some words have magic power to cause actions to happen and give back more words about those actions.

Drone photographer Theresa Graham (tgraham.photography on IG) captured this Ornate Eagle Ray (Aetomylaeus vespertilio) off Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. These rays are called the "unicorn of the sea": fewer than 100 sighting have been documented. We suspect they're critically endangered.

yeah, I think this is a good place to draw the line - replacing human artists with the machine is bad but the ship has one hundred percent sailed on the code side

I guess I can't avoid the code. But I can certainly choose to avoid paying money for image gen assets, voice, images etc.

Manifesto: 2/2 There's an absolute WORLD of opportunities they missed because they were too busy marveling at mediocre LLM-written short stories. If we're smart, if we focus on structured tool use, if we don't get bogged down in the tarpit of reactionary panic, we can eat their fucking lunch

Holy shit. Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt it in Rust and released it as open source. Either all software is dead or the US copyright laws are about to receive an update. getartcraft.com/apps

Establish that violations of the Emoluments Clauses and the Establishment Clause are impeachable. Establish that war crimes are impeachable. None of these require the mens rea questions that so sidetracked the first two Trump impeachments. The facts are the facts.

Kris Nuttycombe reposted

I'm not naive enough to actually believe this will happen, but Democrats could be preparing, right now, lists of impeachment charges against (at a bare minimum) Hegseth, Kennedy, Mullin, Patel, Blanche, & Trump, as well as Bondi, Bovino, & Noem (still worth doing!) that rely purely on public facts,

The real answer to "where did judicial supremacy come from" is that it comes from the amendment process being a dead letter

Every decent human being on the internet simultaneously had to say to themselves, "no, wait, not allowed to say that." There's kinship in that experience.

Like, every single argument for why markets are bad fails when you consider that the alternative to markets is a system where people are given power instead based on arbitrary sentiments & not required to stake anything, and evaluated on subjective measures

The choices we have are markets or mob rule, and after decades of rainbow capitalism followed by a crackdown motivated by populist sentiment I find it bizarre how many queer people still want to take their chances with the sentiments of the people over cold hard numbers

Faced with Democrats making historic and unambiguous errors and then losing elections, there's a group of people who decided the problem is people failing to clap hard enough. They then conclude the *specific* people letting everyone down is whoever they personally find most annoying on social media

This leads to a credibility gap: to put it crudely, why should anyone trust AI safety analysis when y'all are partying with SPECTER and cashing checks from Blofeld? Why should anyone take analysis of lone wolf/PLA misuse of open-weight models seriously when there's no similar analysis of XAI?

The Bond Villain, in this model, is a billionaire who is de facto unconstrained by nation states. They have access to large-scale compute and (via influence or direct ownership) private access to closed weight models that allow them to circumvent any safeguards put on their public use.

As always the best way to learn about AI is via weird trans people on bluesky.

Look, the Rationalist sex cult has a really simple explanation. If you're an insufferable dweeb, nobody's going to pay any attention. But if you're an insufferable dweeb _with a sex cult_, people will think maybe you're kind of cool.

I just think, of all the crazy ideas campaigns we've seen in this country that have succeeded or come close to succeeding, open borders isn't obviously nuts. Abolition, women's suffrage, gay marriage, the Civil Rights movement, ending the war on drugs. All of these had massive headwinds.

As the opposite of a computer toucher, I sometimes worry that I'm not keeping up with the development of things. Luckily, I'm smart enough to realize that if the "most dangerous" LLMs need warehouses full of GPUs to function, they can't just "break out" and start running on random PCs.

We won’t actually fix anything in the U.S. until we fix the voting system and get rid of first-past-the-post voting entirely. At best, we’ll get a temporary reprieve; whether we even get to undo any of the existing damage is an open question.

The goal on the Right has always been to preserve “sovereignty” understood as the right to use American power without restraint and to prevent outside forces to exert any kind of influence over U.S. politics and society – especially any kind of liberalizing, democratizing influence.

We need more than just policy reforms in response, we need a broader idea of the society we want to create to match the right’s vision of the hierarchical ethnostate, and we need a commitment to pluralistic democracy that matches their fury.

increasingly it seems like the only real answer to this is to find ways of ensuring guaranteed income for people. imo we are reaching a point where people who want to build or do things will be able to - unrestrained by skills - and there will be a lot of people who will no longer need to work
