I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
While half of people in American families cannot afford the cost of living, the U.S. continues to burn through $445 billion on mass incarceration each year.
That's a lot of money that could be spent on caring for communities instead of criminalizing them.
As midterm elections approach, affordability is top of mind. Explore the latest data on the cost of everyday items with Urban’s American Affordability Tracker, part of The State of American Affordability on financial well-being. 📈

NEW DATA! We documented 902 cases where people were charged with crimes related to their pregnancy, pregnancy loss, or birth in the three years after Roe v. Wade was overturned.

Alex Cruver in Anchorage even did a honky tonk instrumental version that belongs in a classic western movie, in a saloon just before the big brawl. www.facebook.com/reel/1571906...

We released this as a creative commons attribution non-commercial sharealike tune, because we want anyone and everyone to cover it, add verses, etc. So if you need to localize it or add a thought, go ahead.
My version is even a lil different from Josh's: www.instagram.com/p/Dd-HkqavJQZ/
If you paid any federal income tax last year, then you paid more than these profitable corporations.
When I say the system is broken, this is what I mean.
The deportation agenda can't happen without local law enforcement. To make this happen, ICE has spent millions bankrolling them.
For example, ICE often rents out beds from local jails to hold people:
www.prisonpolicy.org/blog/2024/04...
Why do local law enforcement want to carry out ICE's dirty work in their own communities so badly?
Well, because contracts with ICE are lucrative and yet another way for greedy sheriffs to line their pockets off mass incarceration.
“Autistics are disadvantaged almost from birth. Our power to determine the direction of our lives is taken by presumptions about cognition and perception that simultaneously ignore our abilities and make unreasonable demands upon our disabilities.” -Laura Tisoncik

Trump opened a hotline to report people who defraud the government.
Meanwhile, he's pardoned 70+ fraudsters — including a nursing home owner who stole $1.3B+ from Medicare and Medicaid.
Many pardons only came after their family members gave to Trump's Super PAC.
Hello?
How much does it cost to get information about a cop who punched someone in the face?
About $2.5M, plus 44,816 hours of staff time, according to the Eugene, OR, Police Department.
If that sounds absurd, it’s because it is.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot
A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead:

Trump's vicious cycle of corruption and unaffordability:
Big Oil and DoD contractors profit from Trump's Iran War. You pay higher gas prices.
Big AI rakes it in from Trump's support. You pay higher electricity prices.
The rich get huge tax cuts. You get worse healthcare.
See how this works?
What this piece says—and then derangedly refuses to hear itself saying!!—is that seniors spend less money because the American work force got its stable, guaranteed pensions taken away and replaced with personal investment savings. And then it wonders why they're risk-averse with the money!
The third piece I’ve read in as many days “concerned” that Americans are ”sitting on capital” that needs to be “freed up”.

'Time poverty' is one of modern capitalism’s least discussed forms of deprivation.
When a person has no hours in a day to see friends, to recover, and to relax, life becomes something squeezed around work.
Hey @drewcurtis.bsky.social this brought me back to 2000 and 2001 where Fark was the place where France surrenders everyday at fark dot com. And now I realize that's 25+ years ago. Anyway thank you for what you created, I still have fond memories there.

This is what we really need to thrive — not flying cars or AI or giant data centers.
Autistic adults: "We can show you how to love your autistic child better, because our neurotypical ableist culture makes that harder than it should be."
Autism Grievance Parents: "We're good; we actually value neurotypical ableist culture more than we value our, or our kids', happiness. Kthxbye."
Poverty is a policy decision. Concentrated wealth is a policy decision. Inequality is a policy decision.
Economic inequality is not some naturally occurring phenomenon. It is the consequence of choices.
One question I always urge my students to ask: who is the market organized for — and why?
If Gavin Newsom runs for president in 2028, remember whose side he was on in the fight to rein in the wealth and power of billionaires in California.

Automatic license plate readers are only the tip of the surveillance industrial complex iceberg. Flock's cameras already track our every move, and now they're trying to put microphones on them as well.
We won't be fooled. All of this dystopian tech must go.

Doctors and researchers used to have free rein experiment on people living in poverty, notably Black Americans and women, without their consent.
They rationalized that since they were getting “free” healthcare, they owed something to society.
And now RFK Jr. is doing the same.
