Saw it this morning and can confirm. Sumptuous animation, but any story that starts with a naked child committing suicide is a tough sell in the current marketplace of cozy fantasy. It's still family-friendly fare, but it's got teeth. Recommended.

Michael Lee Witchardson 🎃@hrfmichael.bsky.social

Wildwood is a masterpiece of fantasy filmmaking, plucking the strings of everything from The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia all the way through to Labyrinth and Return to Oz, but dealing with the brutal reality of so much of children's fantasy in a way that feels so contemporary.

We thought there should be a definitive podcast about Sonic, chronologically tracking through the 90s and letting you relive (or first-live) a childhood in those days, with all really good editing and music and features and guests and stuff, so we did. It's nearly over: stctp.zone

This not my schtick - it’s just 100% pure facts! At the risk of grossly simplifying a really complex issue, there’s a lot about the reading crisis which is a self imposed issue, if a lot of people could just get round to seeing reading comics as reading.

Not to steal @markbradley.bsky.social schtick but so many teachers told us kids we’re struggling with reading and attention, particularly boys, but when we asked ”who reads comics” almost every kid raised their hands. That’s an antidote just waiting to be deployed not a symptom.

I'm aiming to write a spooky song every day now until Halloween. Today's will be called Goblins in the Bin - in the key of D major. If any bored (or easily distracted) illustrators want to draw a picture, I will very happily put it in the video & share all the profits (there will be no profits).

This is such a good show. Proper world-building sci-fi, with heavy Moebius vibes.

One of my favorite sci-fi shows of the decade—of the century!—is celebrating its third anniversary today. Scavengers Reign was a shooting star🌠, poorly supported by HBO Max and then Netflix (as it was only available in a handful of countries), but I'm so glad this one season exists.

Wasn't this almost an actual thing about ten years ago? I seem to remember people in the industry pushing for it, and it always struck me as a no-brainer.

Hey, authors, illustrators, poets, etc in the UK and Ireland! I’ve put together a statement in support of Sally Rooney with the help of others. Message me if you’d like to sign?

Ain't this the truth.

Something to be aware of: becoming a professional writer can sometimes, unexpectedly, increase fear and ‘writers block’. When writing was just yours, a bad draft was disappointing. Once it pays your rent and carries your reputation, a bad draft can feel like it threatens your whole livelihood.

Here’s a little comic someone gave me at a recent event that is so good that honestly I might just steal the plot for like book 9 or something.

If you haven't caught #StarTrekProdigy yet, it's one of the best modern Trek shows. Accessible to kids, but fun for anyone, it really feels like the franchise moving forward. Go watch!

Gutted to hear that illustrator Terry Denton has passed away. The 13 Storey Treehouse books were foundational texts for my eldest. Fun to read aloud as a parent but, crucially, the first books he chose to read for himself, and Terry's pictures were a huge help. www.theguardian.com/books/2026/s...

While in Mousehole working on a TV project (that alas was never commissioned) I met Neil Brockman and heard the story in his own words. If this was the only thing the RNLI ever did for humanity, it would be enough to deserve our eternal respect. And they do this every day. Unpaid. For all of us.

Guys. The BBC put #DoctorWho out to tender yesterday. Production companies only have a couple of weeks to get their bids in. The Beeb are open to all formats and series lengths. So let's crowd source this thing. What should it look like when it comes back?

Consider this a pathetic plea on my part, but all encouragement will be gratefully received.

Happy birthday to The X-Files! Yes, it went off the rails but it was so much fun along the way. "Humbug", "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" and "Folie à Deux" remain some of my favourite episodes. Shout out your own favs here!

The RNLI are incredible, literal heroes saving lives at sea. I'm proud to support them. Now would be a really good time to donate. (It's a double win: money for the RNLI and making a stand against fa**ist idiots!)

#KidLitUK writers and illustrators; come and help out a good cause. I've signed up again this year.
