The amount of human suffering, injury, and illness that has been avoided by the advent of hormonal contraception is staggering; the amount of human potential, talent, and innovation that it has unleashed should make you weep with gratitude.

The rise of larger vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks, with their taller hoods and larger blind zones, has contributed to a 75% increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths since 2009. Until we design better streets and ban these vehicles, people outside these vehicles will keep dying.

I’m a climate scientist. Let me fix this headline. “Nearly a century ago, scientists showed that burning fossil fuels warms the planet. Today, we know human emissions account for over 100% of the warming. Yet dark money and disinformation still work to keep Americans addicted to fossil fuels.”

Europe's electricity: 29% fossil fuels in 2024, down from 53% in 2005. Progress. But transport is still 92% fossil. Buildings: 71%. Industry: 61%. And 95% of EU oil and 88% of gas imported. Switching suppliers doesn't fix this. Electrification and efficiency do. More here: rdcu.be/feOjc

Over 50 years later, Marvin Gaye’s 1971“Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” was one of the first mainstream songs to directly address environmental pollution and ecological destruction. The song laments oil spills, radiation, and toxic waste & was revolutionary at the time. #Earthday

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

I haven't said anything about this before, bc in the grand scheme of horrors this only rates as an inconvenience, but since others are experiencing it: Just three days after CBP arrested me for filming them outside Broadview on 9/27, my TSA Pre & Global Entry were suspended—and so were my wife's.

Dave Jamieson@jamieson.bsky.social

I spoke with two ICE watchers who lost their Global Entry after brushes with federal agents. Now an internal memo shows Customs and Border Protection is evaluating cases where people's Global Entry could be revoked based on "encounters" with its officers. www.huffpost.com/entry/ice-wa...

Attention seeking, all attention being thought to be good where it isn't, because it cannot be. To be feared is that a human, a humane goal?

When I last did my party leaflet distribution round a few weeks ago, I reckon more than one house in three had a Ring or other video doorbell. Probably close to one in two.

Paul Bernal@paulbernal.bsky.social

Just to make it even clearer: Ring, and all video doorbells, were always supposed to be part of a surveillance infrastructure. Burn them all and bury the ashes in the desert.

One more thing. The main drive to ban social media for under-16s comes from a fear of regulating it properly *for adults*. That's a fear of the tech-bros and their power. Governments are more willing to regulate kids than techbros.

Please spread this far and wide, as stories don't get much bigger than this. When the government blocks even the intelligence services from telling us we're heading for environmental catastrophe, you know we have a problem. A very big problem. Thank you. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

For sure the US will be tested by Trump's wannabe autocracy, but I stick by the view it will just about come through because it has enough independent institutions. I also stick by the view that most European countries would not because they don't.

But also: these presentday ways of violence are visible because filmed and are - imagine in real-time - virtual, here in my house and there in those woods upto the last very real and unseen second.

I hate war. All this because humans weren't able to speak to another and adapt. And I hate this war, close by for me, because one man thought he had reasons and permission to start this.
