Elon Musk not only controls the satellite systems that the Ukrainian army - and other European armies - rely upon, he also controls the algorithms that govern a large swathe of the European information space. Europe needs to decouple from this clear and present threat to their security. My latest
Here’s 7k words about Palantir and the British state that @lucasamin.bsky.social and I wrote for @lrb.co.uk
TLDR: it’s tech just isn’t that great, and yes the company’s avowed relationship to US state under Trump matters. Obviously.

BRITAIN WOULD BE BONKERS TO DITCH PALANTIR
New @economist.com leader from me on Palantir. I most wanted to highlight its critics' troubling illiberalism—many seem far too blasé letting politics determine which businesses governments buy from.

I don’t think there’s ever been a clearer example of the British media bullying someone, who was so clearly vulnerable, to death so shamelessly in my lifetime for engagement and clicks
And now we’ll have to watch the people that did it claim they’re shocked, and horrified

No, that is not the alternative
The alternative was treating like a normal news story, and not a trial by media - one that was so clearly turbocharged by Arday’s ethnic and social background and the growing resentment in the establishment in the UK of having more black people in high places
The alternative to this is people lying with impunity, with the media knowingly covering it up. It's an awful story. And the media will get a lot of the blame. But those who perpetuated the lies and shielded Arday from facing up to them deserve more of it.
Quite weird to hear BBC News describe Jason Arday as “the black professor accused of plagiarism”. Is every story about a white professor going to include the relevant adjective?
Cunts, the lot of them. It's been utterly relentless and clearly wouldn't have ended because he'd resigned. Like me, I'm sure you've encountered plenty of people on nationals doing sport, features, columns etc, who would distance themselves from the front pages. No sorry, you're just as culpable.
We are just stuck in a fundamentally unserious politics. The difficult conversations about culture and what we tolerate in polite society are lost because they would require politicians to actually do something and, honestly, that sounds hard 😒
The government can't stop posting on Twitter, the LOTO doesn't think Tommy Robinson intimidates Jews, the leading party is campaigning for where they'll put detention camps, and it's likely the only response to the attempted murder of two Jews will be restrictions on pro-palestinian protests.
The Times saying the quiet part out loud here: Zack is an insufficiently loyal caricatured Jew, whose mild criticism of police brutality is *exactly equivalent* to him being a violent accomplice of an antisemitic murderer.
What are we even doing engaging with this pogrom-apologia?

I have done the workings on whether Europe is doing as well as the USA after all, once you tot up all the social ills risked by the typical US citizen.

Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.
Every time the Americans start back on the 'gifted student' discourse, I count myself lucky that my schooling in Derry exclusively involved teachers who'd have sooner guzzled a yard of their own shite than tell a smartarse they were special.
I wrote something for The Nation about how Republican style has changed over the last fifty years.
But first, let me tell you a short story. 🧵

I've had enough.
In this thread, I will tell you, definitively, whether Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.
This way, you will be more informed when shopping for your wardrobe . 🧵
"We have since learned new information, including from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp that Anne Frank was suffering from typhus, and have updated our story to add context about her health problems."
It is very disturbing that many are justifying the EU's trade war surrender to Trump by saying: 'we have to do it otherwise the US won't defend Ukraine'
Will EU citizens accept being US vassals in order to stop Ukraine becoming a Russian vassal?

You may scoff, but before PacMan added AI-ghosts, thousand were employed to control them. My first job in high-school was as a weekend "ghost rider." I fondly remember my 12-hour shifts at the arcade, crammed into the game cabinet. Many older ghost riders never recovered after those 1st AI-layoffs.
For all the focus on personalities and politics, Starmer's real problem is that after a year in office, UK government bonds still trade at a substantial premium to other G7 countries and UK stocks at a huge discount. My latest on what Labour needs to do to win back investor confidence in Britain
Today is the 5 year anniversary to when I slowly started losing my mind during the pandemic and began dressing up as works of art.
As my Twitter account has long been abandoned, why not make a thread of my madness on BlueSky?
This was “The Maid” by Wilhelm August Lebrecht Amberg, from 1862
The Democrats have many faults, but they didn't nominate a corrupt autocrat for the presidency, or sit idly by while he trashed the Constitution & tried to subvert an election.
Conservatives used to believe in responsibility. It's time to stop blaming the left for the moral failings of the right.
Hello! The US housing market has gotten very expensive, but I still dream of one day owning a home in a walkable neighborhood. In that spirit, I'm offering my consulting services. If you support the Trump tariffs, I can help you find US suppliers. Let me show you some examples. 🧵
For people outside the industry, it may not be common knowledge, but one of the most famous bits of technical writing of all time, was Joel Spolsky saying that you should *never* rewrite an entire code base — 25 years ago. www.joelonsoftware.com/2000/04/06/t...
So, the DOGE kids intend to rewrite the social-security administration's COBOL code-base!
and they want to do it ...
... in *a few months*
I did a huge dive into COBOL a few years ago (www.wealthsimple.com/en-ca/magazi...) ...
... so let me explain why DOGE is *way* over its skis here

This is the last stop on Europe's Denial Express.
If Europeans don't understand right now that America is an adversary and not a friend, it will be too late for this continent to escape the horrible fair that is coming around the corner.
Last chance.
Okay I think you are ready for this BlueSky. Let's talk cheese history.
More specifically, Yorkshire Dales cheeses, and how WW2 and rationing almost wiped out cheesemaking in northern Britain.
This is the story of the near-death of the world of one of the world's great cheeses: Wensleydale. /1 🧵
I have a lot of complex feelings watching myself struggle to make coherent sense of how I feel amidst an industry that has dehumanized my people while the Palestinian genocide shows the results of that dehumanisation. A beautiful documentary by @hippolyte.bsky.social.
