ICYMI over the weekend...

If you’re a SFWA member and you like horror, a copy of this story is available for your reading pleasure on the Nebula reading list. This one means a lot as it‘s inspired by Chilean folklore, history, and family lore. Here’s the link: sfwa.org/recommended-...

I just think when some guy from YouTube ruins his own life by being a dipshit, I should get to continue not knowing who he is instead of hearing about him all the time!

I’m seeing people reacting by pointing out that he’s obviously wrong. I appreciate that, but it’s also a pointless exercise. The problem isn’t that he’s wrong. The problem is that this is normal in American politics — and it’s been normal for a while.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

Just in time for the #MMX launch, I've listed these grand statement necklaces that I made from agate or jasper Mars-like beads strung with graduated garnets. A U-shaped pendant holds garnet chunks symbolizing Phobos and Deimos. No two are alike. www.etsy.com/listing/4598...

it is the same exact thing as demanding that black candidates for office “disavow farrakhan,” which happened quite a bit in the 90s and 2000s

James Goodwin@jamesgoodwin.bsky.social

El-Sayed is going to forced to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood at least a dozen times more before the midterms. The point is clearly not the answer. The point is the question. It's basically push-polling.

We are somehow simultaneously "too few for Democrats to worry about" while also being "too pivotal in ensuring Democrats unseat Republicans so we should vote blue no matter what" and it's frustrating to explain this to moderate libs

Julia Serano@juliaserano.bsky.social

...Assumption #4 has been driving me batshit, yet no one seems to realize it: if you're worried trans ppl might potentially harm your Dem candidate's chances, then YOUR CANDIDATE MADE A BAD DECISION! so why not join us in trying to get them to reverse position? juliaserano.medium.com/on-democrats...

Sound advice. Reminds me of one of my favorite stickers.

Seriously. Having fewer US cops makes crime go down. That's because cops don't do what "Law and Order SVU" lies and tells people that they do.🤷🏿‍♂️ What they really do, is give the vast majority of Black people, that are innocent, law abiding citizens, good reasons to never, ever, trust the police.

Mekka Okereke@mekka.mekka-tech.com

Imagine there's a serial killer preying on college sororities. Everyone that looks like Jamie Lee Curtis is in danger! The city responds to this by deploying 1000 cops. Only 5 are homicide detectives.🤡 Only 1 is trained on catching serial killers.🤡 995 are told to arrest 20 sorority girls/month🤦🏿‍♂️

So many people think this picture of NYPD cops is AI. It is not AI. There really are that many cops in NYC, walking around inventing reasons to arrest Black and Puerto Rican and Dominican people.🤷🏿‍♂️ When the number of cops goes down or the cops go on strike? Violent crime goes *down*.

80% of the arrests that cops make, are low level arrests of Black people. And even those arrest numbers need to be artificially puffed up by threatening police officers with punishment if they don't find enough arrests to hit their quotas. And these racist arrests *increase" violent crime.

Mekka Okereke@mekka.mekka-tech.com

"C,mon bro. Please. Just 580 more cops bro. 580 more cops and it'll be perfect. 34,749 cops in New York City is not enough cops bro. We are so close. We can't stop now. Look at the pictures bro. Look at them. That's not enough cops. We only need to add 580 more and it would be enough. Please bro."

🤷🏿‍♂️It's really taken some of you this many years to figure out that Malcolm Gladwell doesn't know what he's talking about. He hits you with that fake Black intellectual NPR voice, and makes Ted talk eyes at you, and then you mistake him for the real Black experts in their fields.

The Atlantic@theatlantic.com

“In recent years, many Americans have decided that their country’s problem was that it had too many police officers, when in fact its problem was that it had too few,” Malcolm Gladwell writes:

We already have flying cars. They're called helicopters. They're really expensive and there are good reasons you have to have a pilot license and work with air traffic control to fly them. Putting jets on a sedan is not going to result in a better vehicle or transportation experience in any way.

It’s something, seeing tiny independent journo orgs like The Handbasket doing investigative reporting while major news co’s get bought by billionaires to prop up fascism. It’s like democracy’s immune system rising up in a fever. Maybe, hop over to www.thehandbasket.co and subscribe, if you’re able.

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. Boomers spent their peak earning years demanding lower income taxes now spending retirement years demanding no property taxes — that puts a very large burden on the income-earning generation squeezed between their kids and declining parents.
