GOP excelling at screwing things up. A lot of small biz will go under bc this industry has grown & flourished over the past few years. Billions in tax revenue will disappear overnight -- better to leave it up to states and local communities to regulate their own needs. www.pbs.org/newshour/eco...

I don’t care what side of the aisle you’re on, nobody should support this kind of deception. They created a fake pamphlet to spark trans outrage and sent it to every home in Texas. Then their paid shills continued the outrage on social media. Politics is broken.

Laura Bassett@lebassett.bsky.social

Team Paxton appears to have sent out fake mailers to Texas voters impersonating a trans student group and claiming to want to help kids secretly transition. The actual group said they had nothing to do with it, despite the mailers copying their aesthetic, and the address traces to a random UPS box.

Trump is a despot. He answers only to Putin and Netanyahu – because they both have Kompromat on him worse than most people can imagine.

Poland’s Foreign Minister Sikorski: basically calling Trump a liar. “The US no longer finances this war since January of last year. In other words, for more than a year and a half. The US has not contributed a single cent to the defense of Ukraine. We are doing it. Europe.”

Kinda wild that there have been wild protests going on in Albania for months set off by a corrupt Kushner luxury resort project and there has been barely coverage of it here 🇺🇸 and Trump never gets asked about it.

interesting study w potential long term effects on offspring

What if childhood COVID infections left a mark on fertility years later? A new mouse study asks exactly that. Prepubertal male mice were given synthetic SARS-CoV-2 RNA (no live virus). It triggered strong systemic inflammatory response, cytokine surge, lung inflammation. 1/6 🧵

Long COVID can develop even after a mild COVID-19 infection. Symptoms can persist or emerge weeks or months after the initial infection, including fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, and other health complications. Long COVID is not limited to those who experience severe illness. (...)

This will never stop blowing my mind. A 12-year sequence of real telescope images of a star 133 lightyears away. And around it, four planets slowly orbiting. Four real exoplanets, each more massive than Jupiter, imaged as they move around their host star.

just brutal local news coverage ....

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

This is priceless. Check out how local news is reporting on Sen Eric Schmidt’s clown-show grilling of Jack Smith. They found Jack Smith at the game… “Top corner, section 109, row 1. In fact, that seat doesn’t even exist in Atlanta.”

If a Dem Senator did this we’d be listening to 6 mths of how Dems are out of touch with real Americans. So… Why don’t GOP MAGA politicians know and understand college vs pro sports teams? Guess they’re relying on AI to tell them all the answers lol

I hope this headline haunts Eric Schmitt for the rest of his pathetic political career.

Any sweeping systemic change you want to make in the United States has to begin with adding seats to the Supreme Court in 2029. No major reform bill will survive the current court. No civil rights law, no anti-corruption law, no wealth tax, nothing.

I had an idea. What if, instead of recalling contaminated food back to the production facility where it was made, we had some kind of set up where the food went through a testing process of some kind. You could perhaps have national standards or something for it

We as scientists must assume that *NOTHING* this administration does with regard to NIH or NSF comes from a place of good faith, even if you agree with the action in principle

Mark Peifer (He, him)@peiferlabunc.bsky.social

We also have to remember that there is almost certainly a hidden agenda behind this with the current administration--making it easier for political appointees to make decisions that have nothing to do with the merit of the science

One thing that’s always bothered me about the “lab leak” theory, is how many of its proponents shift back and forth from “bioweapon” to “unethical science” (gain of function) to “negligent science” (leak of naturally occurring virus) to adapt to different debates and for max political effect.

Philipp Markolin@philippmarkolin.eurosky.social

The lab leak theory is not a strict scientific theory, but mostly a narrative of different allegations Rand Paul is not only falsely accusing Fauci of creating SARS-CoV-2, he is endorsing a very stupid version of the origin theory that has incredibly strong evidence against it. Let me illustrate:

Very interesting article, and in my field (plant taxonomy etc.) the bottlenecks are fieldwork, museum work, permits, grants, old literature, and simply 'we do not know what we are looking for until we have found a new species' - it is discovery in the unknown sometimes, not based on data we have.

Everyone says AI will accelerate science. I don't think it will -- at least not in biology, and at least not soon. New post where I explain why, and how the productivity paradox can be resolved: blekhman.substack.com/p/why-ai-wil...
