In general I think shirking is a hugely effective tool in the cops political arsenal and whole progressive elected officials have a workable toolkit for punishing affirmative abuses (abuse of force, etc), there’s less of one for negative abuses (refusing to do the legitimate parts of the job)

the ape brain is wired for distributive questions so the temptation is to think things in "those fuckers" and "our shit" terms but the reality is clearly that power is the dangerous thing they have, not money.

yeah at minimum, don't take data center water shit seriously from anyone who isn't also extremely anti-farmer. they have pumped so much water that the Central Valley is literally sinking. it's not "food on your table 🥺" it's shit like alfalfa. they do this because water is basically free for them.

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

Many people think this but it's not true! Data centers are a small rounding error compared to agriculture. And it pains me that this is the case as a golf hater but golf no longer consumes meaningful amounts of water as most courses in the southwest have switched to graywater irrigation

Starting next week pools are gonna be closed on weekdays in Sac while temps are still in the 100s. One may think “Huh maybe we should raise the tickets above $3-5$ so we can keep the pools open” But user fees are inequitable. So in the spirit of ensuring equal access the pool will be inaccessible.

There is pervasive corruption across our healthcare and agricultural systems that defy party lines. I meet with MAHA activists because a lot of their concerns are bipartisan issues that major corporations paint as partisan. The fight isn't left and right, it's top and bottom.

Also this should put to bed the "San Francisco has always been more expensive. Yes, some periods (look at that quake and fire spike!) show it out of step, but it really started to diverge as we stopped building homes, making it impossible to absorb booms and causing people to hope for busts

Despite claims of pedestrian and bike oriented development, which I guess means some bike lanes, Treasue Island SF still feels equally if not more car oriented than other SF neighborhoods. Pleasant, if desolate, but still with much potential.

In frontline regions, passenger trains are forced to run under extreme safety measures—using a flatbed car at the front to trigger potential mines, while drivers are protected by added armor plates and mesh shielding.

Abolish and prosecute ICE. They did a murder in broad daylight today. Imagine what they're doing in the closed facilities we're somehow not even allowed to see.

Been frustrated - as we all have - with this court, but this seems like a pretty remarkable ruling. I rather suspect the court does not rule this way without the collapsing approval numbers, without No Kings, without the Dems sweeping special elections.

I think you should be able to buy a cup of coffee or a bite to eat in America’s urban parks, and that the refusal to allow this is rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding of what urban parks are, and what purpose they serve.

American park concession policy drives me insane. Here I am with my kid at the biggest park in Berkeley. There are hundreds of people here at birthday parties, playing tennis/basketball/frisbee, and running the dogs. And yet the closest place to buy a *coffee* is a half mile walk.

okay sure so it worked in Denver and in Austin and it worked for downtown Oakland and for Sacramento and yes, it’s worked for decades in Tokyo but how can we be *sure* that building a lot more homes will make California a more affordable place to live??

Denver is building so many new apartments that vacancy rates reached a 16-year high and the average rent has fallen below levels seen two years ago, according to the Apartment Association of Metro Denver. The average apartment rent in metro Denver fell to $1,819 in the first quarter.

At the heart of many of the U.S.’s problems is lack of mobility: In the 19th century 1 in 3 people moved each year. Today 1 in 13 do so. Our reduced mobility flows from our profound failure over the past 50 years to build new homes in areas of economic opportunity. It’s strangling us as a nation.🧵

theatlantic.comHow Progressives Froze the American DreamThe U.S. was once the world’s most geographically mobile society. Now we’re stuck in place—and that’s a very big problem.

I don’t like the “people are voting with their feet” line about California and NYC’s population loss/decline. People aren’t voting with their feet, they’re losing the game of musical chairs. To the extent population is falling, it’s due to shrinking household sizes, not vacancy. Demand remains high.

If the owner of a single-family home rented to an immigrant family of six kicks them all out to put the house on the market for sale, and then a rich family of two empty-nesters buys it, the population of that lot has dropped by two-thirds. So clearly it doesn’t need any more housing.

Senator Scott Wiener@scottwiener.bsky.social

There’s a narrative that because California experienced a small population loss — which is now turning around — that means we don’t need to build new homes. False. California dug a big hole for decades & has a huge housing shortage. Prices are higher than 5 years ago. We need many more homes.
