While long-term funding is key to the National Cycle Network's success, £104m over four years is £26m a year... the equivalent of upgrading a single A-road junction. CWIS3, the government's four-year strategy mentioned '7,000 additional or improved [NCN] miles by 2030'...so £14,857 per mile?

Change the way we travel? Then mandate that councils MUST rapidly roll-out safe, connected, direct cycle infrastructure everywhere (+fund them). It takes 15-20 mins by e-bike to travel across town, but direct uses a 40mph road with guaranteed close passes and only a narrow footpath for active travel

I think the worst part of Labour's response to the fascist mobilisation is Andy Burnham's absence. He's the most popular politician in the country, with social media reach and actual powers of persuasion, and he's saying nothing in public. He can actually be of use here but he's choosing not to

On Tallinn's Kalamaja Street, a conventional traffic sewer has become a hybrid of two familiar Dutch concepts: the woonerf, or curbless living street where pedestrians, cyclists and drivers share the same space, and the fietsstraat, where bicycles are given priority and cars are effectively guests.🧵

"Mr Speaker, my government is today announcing special police action in response to RNLI staff and volunteers being threatened by these hate-filled people. We remind the UK public that RNLI staff are emergency workers and we *will* protect them as such to the full extent of the law" C'mon Andy...

The mental gymnastics you have to perform to find fault with the RNLI... These are volunteers, putting their lives at risk to stop people dying at sea. They're from communities where that used to be a common and earth-shaking occurrence, regardless of who the victim was.

Over on X, the far-right British Patriots have launched a hate campaign against the RNLI They are recording RNLI volunteers in order to dox them, reveal their identities and publish details of where they and their families live These men are dangerous

A new housing development under construction in the Netherlands The cycle infrastructure is already in place, complete with junctions ready to connect to future homes, along with dedicated bus lanes Active and sustainable travel is planned from the very beginning, not bolted on as an afterthought

The BBC looking anything but impartial or balanced on this one. Farage has gone into backside covering mode, not a surprise. But Britain's broadcaster actively playing to his narrative is even more shameful.

GylesNaMopaleen@gylesnamopaleen.bsky.social

yikes! this is how the BBC introduced the farage scandal footage to viewers. It wasn't in the top 5 news items and it's presented as "complex".....and the sting was done by a firm "from the US...that was founded by the Centre of Climate reporting"!!! 1/3

Then 30p Lee goes completely unchallenged...claiming "no laws have been broken" and slipping in the same claim that the footage was funded by climate change activists. utterly jaw dropping. As a reminder, this is the UKs public broadcaster, folks. 3/3

Who could have predicted that making this kerb at-grade on a busy junction would lead to it being driven on and needing protection? Me. Me predicted it.

If you're in the mood to be enraged and have your heart broken, this will do it: A stunt driver in the GTA is charged in the death of a young dad, and the penalty is so slight that he keeps stunt driving. And is charged again. Cars are weapons in the wrong hands www.thestar.com/gift-redeem?...

Am I an outlier in that most people don't understand just how ubiquitous cycling infrastructure is in the Netherlands vs other nations and how powerful that infrastructure is? Yes, it is flat. I have a flat 30mph road near me but it is a rutted, cluttered hellscape compared to the same in NL.

Christopher Jensen@christopherbech.bsky.social

👍 To be fair both Netherlands and my Denmark are notoriously flat nations, this does make bicycle rides more convenient than E.G. Nepal. But most nations can in urban areas adapt roads to it to the benefit of all. New York city, Chicago etc are just as flat as Amsterdam.

Unprotected bus stops lead to dangerous crush movements, even if everyone is careful & follows the rules. This leads to people cycling aggressively (jumping reds) or cycling on the pavement. Well designed floating bus stops make near misses & crashes between buses and cyclists almost impossible.

London Cycling Campaign@londoncycling.bsky.social

There's been extensive research on floating bus stops, where cycle tracks pass bus stops on a main road. They need to be designed well - but the claims they're dangerous just don't match the evidence. Without them, cycling won't be inclusive & safe for everyone. www.standard.co.uk/news/london/...

We know how to build infrastructure that keeps people safe(r) and encourages cycling - we have pages and pages of documents on how to do it properly and why. We just choose not to.

Jon Owen@anotherjon.bsky.social

Research undertaken here in the UK (see below) found that unprotected 'paint-only' cycle lanes are actually worse than nothing at all, so their only purpose is for a local authority to be seen to be delivering some cycle provision. road.cc/content/news...
