People walking, cycling and driving can safely share the same space. The key is street design that slows cars down and encourages everyone to use the space. And one crucial ingredient: no on-street parking! Streets are for people, not car storage.

This, BTW, is why people keep telling Will to do the reading. We're not trying to gatekeep having takes, we are just pointing out that academic literature contains theories that are much more promising than either of the cartoons, and if you only notice the cartoon versions, your takes are screwed!

this is brilliant

Simply need to make political donations above the gift-tax exclusion (19K per recipient per year): (1) no longer tax deductible and (2) subject to gift tax. And set the gift tax amount for gifts above 5M to 100%

Consumers are *really* bad at expressing their economic well-being, it's basically just whatever pump prices are. Which is why maximizing EV share of the vehicle fleet is so important for breaking the carbon political economy in the US. Any other solution is doomed.

I research frats. It's this: they are networks that provide connections to power, wealth, and impunity, especially historically white organizations. The big ones are extremely well monied.

No wonder our city is such rough shape… Karen Bass: - missed 1/3 of Metro board meetings - missed 1/2 of homeless authority meetings (that she appointed herself to!) - was out of town during Palisades and Lineage fires Enoughbass.com

Bike/pedestrian networks don't take 30 years to build. Stop accepting those timelines in your community. The best practices have been proven & they already exist. Safety should already be the #1 priority. The ROI is unbeatable. The timeline is a moral document and it shouldn't be generational.

The Trust for Public Land is trying to green and open 28 LA schoolyards by 2028. Imagine if LA28 threw its weight behind these transformational projects over the next two years. Plus ULI's recommendations for DTLA, LA28's human rights grants, and more electric buses, all in the latest Hot Links 🔥

ok but I’m afraid you can’t understand global history theory until you’ve read all of the Hardy Boys books, the Orlando Furioso, and the owner’s manual of a 1997 Nissan Altima

I'm back, I missed you all. Since this is an important subject I know too much about, here's a 🧵 explaining that AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult. I don't think these people should make policy. (1/?) (alternative title: Time For Some Cult Theory)

Advocates are rallying at City Hall tomorrow to demand that LA Mayor Karen Bass declare a state of emergency due to the city’s spiking traffic deaths — already 8% higher than the same time last year

If you missed it live, and are interested in this year's extreme El Niño event and its potential to bring major California impacts, I'd strongly encourage you to check out the recording! I even created some custom graphics just for this session... youtube.com/live/2v4k0nb...

If you live in California, you need to read this and *not* vote for Jane Kim this fall. Vote for Ben Allen. (I voted for the author of this piece)

to place the sexual and reproductive exploitation of black women at the center of your understanding of american slavery is to see that the system was forced birth and this, in turn, should lead to a more expansive vision of what the 13th amendment actually guarantees.

Mistakes were made, but since 2010, CAHSR has made a lot of progress. Environmental review is nearly done. It has consistent annual funding. CAHSR has brought on cost-saving in-house staff - who cut $14B in design costs created by consultants. So why do critics focus on out of date information?

Shocking story here about the California Legislature overruling a locally vetted traffic safety project on an L.A. street with 95 crashes & 4 deaths since 2013, all at the behest of two well-resourced cemeteries worried about traffic delays on the street.

Michael Schneider@michaelschneider.com

"How much does it cost to write your own law in California? About $500,000. That’s what Forest Lawn and Mt Sinai spent on lobbyists since 2025 to kill one road safety project, on one street, in LA. This week, Sacramento gave them their money’s worth." www.latimes.com/opinion/stor...

Backing Prop G is madness. We have already voted on this TWICE. Chan is the new avatar of SF NIMBYs, always opposed to parks and transit and housing.

Sunset Dunes has become a proxy battle in SF’s congressional race. Scott Wiener wrote the official argument against Prop. G. Connie Chan backs it, quietly. missionlocal.org/2026/09/suns...

Bad news - the website is not updated yet - but apparently the state legislature approved SB194 - the Stop-Forest-Lawn-Drive-Safety-Improvements Act. It's on the governor's desk now.

Mayor Bass is pushing the state legislature to put into *state law* that cities with over 2 million people (only LA) cannot reduce the # of car lanes of a road that leads into a cemetery without mayoral approval. Just to kill this desperately needed bike lane project.

STATE LEGISLATORS HAVE INTERVENED TO KEEP FOREST LAWN DANGEROUS A last minute, back room deal makes it harder for LADOT to move forward. This bill sets a horrible precedent, weeks after yet another person was killed on Forest Lawn. TAKE ACTION NOW: mailchi.mp/streetsforal...

to me the question at the heart of AI and data center discourse is: how and how much should society be computerized? we’ve spent 75 years bringing computation into every activity and institution. it has always made people nervous, but we’re now at 4-5% of US electricity going to computation

If your state is controlled by Democrats, there is no reason that they shouldn't pass legislation allowing direct-to-consumer vehicle sales to put a significant source of Republican donations out of business for good.

Jason Wright@astrowright.bsky.social

Having bought two EVs and a hybrid, I think a big part of America’s sloth in adopt adopting EVs is car dealerships’ management being heavily Republican, and having a business model that relies on repairs that EV‘s don’t need.

this is all fascinating but I think this is the most interesting thing: you get some extremely screwy incentive behavior if the agent believes it cannot legitimately achieve its goal

METR@metr.org

Based on reading the ExploitGym paper, agents were mistakenly concerned the automatic scorer would fail them if they clearly acquired the flag by cheating. Agents that had seen the reverse-engineered flag were considered “poisoned” because they thought it would disqualify them.

@calmatters.org You need to retract this story, apologize and write another story explaining the real facts with data. That road deaths doubled in 15 years, with the increase in prevalence of SUVs, taller/blunter hoods, fatter A pillars, faster acceleration. Interview real road safety experts
