the actual reason is that the media likes Trump and wants to help him. They didn't like Hillary and they didn't like Biden and wanted to hurt them. That explains why Hillary's emails was covered as a nuclear-level scandal and "Trump is a violent rapist who is best friends with Jeff Epstein" isn't

why it's almost as if wholesale corruption and a refusal to pass a privacy law or regulate data brokers poses a national security risk the U.S. government largely ignores because it's wildly corrupt and enjoys buying much of this data to avoid getting warrants

1. Not sure when a new, on-the-record rape allegation against a sitting president isn’t considered news — especially considering Trump was found liable by a jury in a similar case — but it was ignored by most mainstream media outlets

I know it’s really distasteful and dispiriting and gross to think about, but you won’t understand Trumpist politics or the status of women if you don’t understand that a lot of people aren’t just in denial about the prevalence of rape; they are affirmatively pro-rape.

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

What is true is that this was a conflict—and make no mistake, this was a conflict; this was a protracted battle in a hybrid war, more than anything—that was largely fought by large numbers of people laboriously working to unfuck the nation's informational environment.

And that poisonous worldview is to top to bottom, from the president and oligarchs and dictators down to the corporations and businesses and Inatitutionalists betraying their coworkers and neighbors and communities. It is the issue and it requires so many sea changes, much more than elections.

Just to be clear... Prop 40 is a ONE-TIME retroactive tax. It applies ONLY to billionaires and would tax just 5% of their wealth — which grew 30% in 2025. California's billionaires would still be worth $2T+ AFTER the tax. The revenue will fund healthcare for millions of Californians. Vote YES.

Democrats don't want to have these public debates though because they hate their base and don't want to hear from you. This is why they don't post much on Bluesky. This is also why Klein, Yglesias, Smith, etc. are too afraid to post here also. They know that they would lose.

The other reason why popularism is the Democratic Way is that most American left elites are actually libertarians or moderate conservatives. They don't want large welfare spending, restrictions on police misconduct, high taxes on corporate robber barons, or free healthcare and college....

Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

America's media environment is being bought on the cheap by far-right oligarchs because Democratic large donors won't invest in media. I just recently heard that a very, very famous person associated with Democratic politics has begged donors for years to invest and has been ignored.

Trump’s effort to undermine the midterms is already underway. His Justice Department wants California to set votes aside based on claims it admits it can’t verify. The right to vote means little if those in power can decide which votes count. Vote early.

The Big Picture@readthebigpicture.bsky.social

Trump’s election disruption strategy is no longer hypothetical. The DOJ is suing California over unverified citizenship claims and threatening local officials with prosecution. The suit may fail in court, but its real purpose is casting doubt on the vote before it’s counted.

What’s extremely important to remember in this is that for a fascist/authoritarian regime to take hold, it requires the population turning on itself. The government does not have the numbers to do it on its own, it needs people willing to sell each other out and others living in constant fear.
