In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

We need a startup to genetically de-engineer fascist ghouls.

The greatest challenge of our time isn’t to figure out how to get to Mars or become interstellar, but to figure out how to live sustainably on Earth.

We already have an AI kill switch: cut power to servers. Really want to talk existential threat? Fine. We humans have many ways to blow things up. Like data centers. Panicky discourse assumes the first priority is protect tech company investments and expand their businesses. But why should it be?

If OpenAI or Anthropic really believe that this technology has a non-trivial probability of destroying humanity within a decade, where is their SCRAM switch?

This "so dangerous it has to be useful" narrative is tedious, and highlights how little these companies have fear regulation in the current US environment. But it's worse. If and when the technology actually gets dangerous, the boy will have already cried wolf so many times we'll ignore him.

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

I was asked by a colleague from my oil & gas days (who has remained in the industry) why UK producing its own gas is less acceptable to the Greens (& others) than importing it from America and West Africa.' The full question & my reply is now online at: climateuncensored.com/there-is-no-...

You’ve gotta use AI because it’s the future. But also it’ll take your job. But also it’ll create a paradise on earth and solve most of our problems. But also it’ll end humanity soon. But also you’ll get left behind if you don’t use it right now.

I fucking hate the fact that due to all the hyping by these technofascist misfits I don't know when the whole AI-scare actually gets scary. Is it just hyperbolic marketing speak? Who knows? Boy cries wolf too many fucking times.

As always Cory’s work is amazing and exposes the worst of the world we live in today. The system can’t be reformed and it must be destroyed.

Amazon's own balance sheet presents the most compelling evidence that we are stuck in the Enshittocene, the era in which everything is turning into a pile of shit, because the worst ideas of the worst people now make the most money. 1/

There are many, many reasons to hate AI (many!). However, one minor but very annoying one is that RAM and disks have become so expensive. Looking into a replacement for my cheapo old-timey NAS, but the reasonably priced ones all have tiny amounts of memory and tiny disks. This used to be cheap!

Pedro Sánchez has sent a letter to the EU institutions complaining about the political reaction of some member states to the migratory crisis in Ceuta. “In the current international context, the European Union cannot afford this kind of selfish, polarising and unlawful reaction.” 🧵
