In a NYT piece about 60,000 migrants arriving in Spain, not a single word about what will happen to them, why they were there, who they are. An entire section on “why this matters” just about European politics. Very sad that this is the role of the last huge source of journalism in this country

nytimes.comWhat to Know About CeutaThe peninsula on Morocco’s northern coast that Spain has governed for centuries has been a frequent site of mass migrant crossings and political tensions.

My team uncovered that foreign enemies are targeting U.S. servicemembers in war zones by buying their location data. The threat to national security posed by data brokers has never been more clear. We need to dismantle the surveillance advertising industry.

Scoop: Central Command is getting reports that military personnel are being targeted using commercially available location data. Few details available, but it’s a sign that the tech industry’s advertising-surveillance complex is having consequences on the battlefield. www.reuters.com/business/med...

A lot of people epically failed to accept the basic reality that the 2024 election was an election with huge moral stakes and a clear right and wrong answer (for a wide range of reasons). They now are twisting themselves into knots to protect themselves from accepting that moral failing.

“One young man sobbed when a guard pushed him to the floor. He said, ‘I’m not a gang member. I’m gay. I’m a barber.’ I believed him. *** He “began to whimper,” as his head was roughly shaved, “folding his hands in prayer as his hair fell.” He “asked for his mother & cried as he was slapped again.”

The path to authoritarianism starts with "they're all corrupt," "they all lie to you," and "everything is a scam." It lets you pass off feeble-mindedness as sophistication and substitute objectivity for subjectivity. Liberal democracy requires that certain things be true and certain things be moral.

Stucko reposted

The big lesson of the last 50 years is that cynicism benefits authoritarians. As such, if liberals are ever able to regain power, we should prioritize restoring trust in institutions. The best way to do this is to mete out extremely harsh punishments against powerful people who abused this trust.

They claim they can snatch people up, put them on planes, and deport them to a country run by an authoritarian, where those people will be forced to work slave labor at an inhumane prison. All without due process, and in defiance of federal courts. The hypotheticals are over. This is the nightmare.

like Marshall McLuhan said, the medium is the message, and the message of social media sites is that nothing is real: a) Twitter-like sites tell you that nothing is real and that you should be cynical and conspiratorial about that b) Instagram-like sites tell you nothing is real so be entertained

Peaceful protest is protected under our First Amendment: freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, freedom of the press. Trump threatening to pull federal funding from schools over Americans protesting is unconstitutional on several levels. It’s authoritarian overreach & must be repudiated.

I legitimately think a nontrivial reason why the world went to shit is that at some point, we decided there are mess makers and mess cleaners and if the mess makers make a mess too big for the mess cleaners, it just shows the mess cleaners suck.
