Doug Ford’s war on bike lanes isn’t about traffic—it’s part of a global right-wing backlash to vilify urban residents and defend fossil fuel interests.
@desmondcole.bsky.social reports from the frontlines of the showdown in Toronto.

The Neoliberalism Shock Doctrine playbook:
An external threat (Trump's threat to annex Canada)
Causes a hero to be elected (Carney)
Who institutes
1) privatization of public goods (airports etc)
2) corporate tax cuts (Mega-Deduction)
and
3) removal of regulations (gutting climate policy)
I think as well that the American ethos of “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore” will not wear well in this situation against the Canadian national ethos of “You will not believe how long I will take this. I am going to tolerate this thing like no one you have ever seen before.”
We discussed all this on our podcast as well, and @pkrugman.bsky.social is just brilliant all throughout:
"Trump is going to lose this trade war...Mark Carney has a 60% approval rating and 30% disapproval. It’s Trump upside down."

If you've been lapsing in your commitment to buying Canadian, it's time to triple down.
As much as 'no deal is better than a bad deal' is true, this is gonna hurt.
If your response to being annoyed at USA chants is “It’s not political, get over yourself”, I would just politely respond that you can fix your country and we can come back in 25-50 years to have this conversation, supposing humanity lasts that long.
I'm in the Star today with a piece on the Carney government's handling of relations with the United States. Last year, Canadians gave Mark Carney a mandate to disentangle our country from the empire to the south. By any reasonable standard, he's done the opposite.

A group of TO civil society leaders (in a sea of people who aren't saying a peep) have created TO Reality Check to oppose the Island Airport expansion. Give them some time + share where you can. They've made it easy to send a letter to Liberal MPs who could stop all this today. torealitycheck.ca
"In private phone conversations with Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, Trump had threatened to scrap the 1908 agreement delineating their shared border" www.wsj.com/world/europe...
There are very few God-given rights we have as Canadians but one of them, for a good long 75 years, has been that anyone with an antenna or an internet connection should be able to watch hockey on Saturday night for free on our taxpayer-supported public broadcaster.
This shit sucks
It’s the end of hockey on the CBC. I know it’s business and business is the only thing that matters today but I feel bad for people, often seniors, that can only afford basic cable.
So bizarre to see Jalen Brunson (rightfully) achieve absolute lifelong legend status in New York, and realize 90% of hockey players don't seem to want that.
Like, hockey stars actively flee from it. He's living their worst nightmare right now.
I went home recently to write about Alberta’s separatists. What I found was a movement wildly, dangerously disconnected from reality. www.thestar.com/opinion/star...
www.thestar.com/opinion/cont... 'Fundamentally, this is a government that sees private profit as synonymous with the common good and believes that safeguarding the interests of corporate investors should be the preeminent concern of public policy.'
A Canadian making $70k a year will save $11 a month. This will reduce contributions to the plan by $3 billion. A year.
I can't even fathom the thinking that went into this.
Carney keeps doing these tax breaks that don't do shit for individuals but cost the government billions. It's pathological.
Hey, so if Avi Lewis is already generating obvious concern among media pundits, old guard former NDP leaders, and provincial NDP who embrace Lib/Con lite policies, he's probably onto something very important.
The world could be such a nice place if we allowed it. It's all so goddamn unnecessary. There's no need for any of it. It's so beautiful here. It should be so cool to be alive
I'm one of a select few who would attempt a serious piece under a picture of Hacksaw. This is why I'm going nowhere. Anyway, it's a pretty scrambled thinker on where I am with all of the Team USA stuff, and the Team USA stuff to come this summer.

The lesson is take your best players. Those lesser skilled roles can easily be filled by the better players. They can handle it.
The Canadian and US players will do anything you tell them to do in a tournament like this.
Goal scoring is the hardest thing to do in the sport. Take those guys
Maybe now Canada can actually examine our development model and decision making processes that rely on provincial politics and making sure we have 10 guys that won a cup a decade ago on the team?
For The Ringer, I wrote about how amazing it was that the brilliant Catherine O'Hara finally became a superstar in her 60s, and how sad it is that she was taken from us just when we had all finally begun to appreciate her:
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”
That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.
My latest for The Tyee! Video coming soon :)
Long story short: why the fuck are our politicians not even trying to properly move, en masse, off a platform that is now the top creator of AI deepfakes, non-consensually violating women and kids?
I also spoke with a victim.
Her story is powerful:
“Seeing the bikini one was incredibly violating, but then seeing that they could ultimately create a full nude of me felt so embarrassing and so shameful.”

The best time to plant a tree, it’s said, was 20 years ago. The second-best time is right now. That also holds true for leaving X, @maxfawcett.bsky.social writes.
The @ndp.ca (or other parties) could do more than delete X
They could push for rules requiring government accounts only operate on platforms that meet higher standards around moderation, security and transparency
Lead by example. Governments implicitly endorse these platforms with their presence
Canada isn't banning X and its ministers continue to use it. Ok. What are the consequences of creating child sex abuse material and deepfake porn? www.thestar.com/news/canada/...
Under my leadership, the next time the NDP holds the balance of power in parliament, we’ll have one demand: proportional representation.
Sous ma direction, la prochaine fois que le NPD détiendra la balance du pouvoir au Parlement, nous n'aurons qu'une exigence : la représentation proportionnelle.
Fighting oligarchy-fuelled fascism by promoting the tools owned by the oligarchs. Literally putting money in their pockets that will be used to fund the campaign of some monster in the mid-terms.
