There is a common belief that great events must have great foundational causes and often they do. But I think the history of the 21st Century-and not just US history-owes more to a badly designed ballot in Florida than any other single cause. For want of a nail indeed.

A lot of dictatorships try to make these kind of arrangements when things go south. Important to remember there are other kinds of criminal, civil and reputational accountability pardons can’t touch. And if you’re pardoned you have no 5th amendment rights.

we're going to need a long-term plan, with broad political appeal, for ending impunity & holding the trump administration accountable for its crimes, malfeasance & cruelties. not 'tit-for-tat' but an american version of transitional justice. my take in @slate.com 👇

I think the history of this era will state that American democracy was saved by their stupidity and impatience. They came in and trashed the place before they could consolidate power. And it turned out not to be popular. We got lucky.

True, but even the Nazis were intelligent enough to bide their time with much of their policies. They waited a year and a half for the purge, waited until Hindenburg died to create the dictatorship, waited two and a half years to enact the Nuremberg laws, 5 years until the Anschluss, etc.

Aside from the crimes throughput the DJT administration, this gives you insight into the treachery of Heritage, American Moment, and others on the right. If Nixon had gone to jail, or if DJT had been prosecuted (and convicted) in DC, it would have stopped a lot of this bullshit.

GOP does nothing but gin up culture wars. Meanwhile: — GOP slashed SNAP benefits to 5+ million Americans, forcing them to turn to food banks. — Trump's tariffs and war spurred inflation, making it more expensive to eat at The Cheesecake Factory. Prices are now ~13% higher than when he took office.

Writing tie-ins is *a real fucking skill* and anyone who sneers at the people who do it can go piss up a rope. You think it's easy to write an entire novel to very specific order on an almost impossibly tight deadline? And have it be satisfying to read? Motherfucker, *you* try it. See how you do.

Kate Tell-Tale Heartfield@kateheartfield.com

There is a doofus currently arguing here that no "creative talent" would choose to write tie-ins, and since I just did a panel this weekend on why creative talents choose to write IP, here are a few reasons. Non-financial reasons, for fun and because frankly it usually doesn't pay that well.

This is such a stupid thing to say. Because if it were true, we wouldn't need a Constitution and Bill of Rights written by humans. And every country would have had the same Constitution and Bill of Rights from the beginning of time.
