People like Matt Yglesias treat the militarized border as an unchangeable reality and an automatic political loser when in reality it is an incredibly recent lurch to the right whose consequences are now in full view of the citizenry.

Ditch-digging is pleasanter work than full-time job searching & almost definitionally pays better

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

There's this concept that unemployed people should "treat looking for a job like it's full time work" that doesn't really survive first contact with the *actual* labor market. There are very quickly diminishing returns to looking for work.

it's kinda funny the two-fold gap between: 1. people should probably job search more (and we should provide more support to overcome labor market frictions) 2. the amount of job search people want other people to be doing is totally insane

peoples sympathy for "the poor" is always man in hard hat and not like... homeless queer 16-22 year old, venezuelan migrant laborer, guatemalan mayan lady washing dishes, filipino lady taking care of old people in a hospital, indian sysadmin...

the problem with american leftists is that they refuse to comprehend that the american public isn't the poor oppressed industrial proletariat of yesteryear, but decadent violent rich assholes who depend on a disposable class of migrant laborers (historically black peasantry) to work for them

Like, if you wiped the memories of everyone currently in DSA and sent us all back in time to 2016 or 2020, does the org endorse Bernie Sanders for president? If the answer is no, then DSA basically does not deserve to exist in the state it currently does. This is basically the same question imo

the thing to focus on is how few democrats are actually doing it. the vast majority of democrats running this fall are not cutting bigot ads, which is good because it means we can crush these people in the future

If Democrats actually win big because people want a check on Trump corruption I expect every move to do so will be covered in the corporate media as being risky to their 2028 position.

Given the shift in media ownership over the Trump era, Democrats REALLY need to learn to ignore media handwringing now. Because I have no doubt their every move for accountability will be attacked from every possible angle.

Tonight's #HalloweenRecs isn't one movie, it's five! That's right we're talking Creepshow One of the best horror anthologies ever, this movie by Stephen King and George Romero is a salute to old EC horror comics and it captures the tone of them perfectly (TW for bugs though, lots and lots of bugs)

"This is about regulating against illegal content, it's not about regulating sexual kinks," Baroness Bertin told Sky News. Um, when the British government declares certain consensual sexual behavior between adults "illegal," that is pretty much the definition of regulating sexual kinks.

This is the issue when the government tries to regulate consensual sexuality between adults. The more legislators move away from relatively bright, easily demonstrable, lines (consent, age), the more likely you end up with porno copypasta that can be interpreted broadly and enforced arbitrarily.

Preach. 🙌 What’s shocking to me is how many people who want to get rid of 230 actually just have no idea how it works.

Mike Masnick@masnick.com

Just to say, this is false. The premise of 230 was the exact opposite of that. It was to encourage them to exercise editorial judgment, which they could not do under the Stratton Oakmont v. Prodigy decision. So you have it exactly backwards.

I think Dolly would rather you fix the school funding formula so that our public schools can afford to teach kids to read, actually

New Jersey Assembly Democrats@njassemblydems.bsky.social

A little Dolly Parton magic could be arriving in New Jersey. A bill sponsored by Assemblyman Bill Moen advanced out of committee to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to New Jersey, providing a free book every month to enrolled children under five. Now that's a story worth sharing! 📖

there is an urgent need to break beyond repair the ideological avarice that allows a billionaire to do this. it must become socially unacceptable, anathema to national self-consciousness

I'm a big supporter of accountability & I really want Dems to pursue it, but I just want everyone -- pols & ordinary Dem voters -- to be prepared for the scale of the pushback against it. It's going to be immense. It will take intense focus & commitment to really follow through on it.

It's impossible to overstate how twisted and evil those Texas mailers are; this is one of at least a dozen reasons. There are no depths to which the GOP will not sink, and they must be resoundingly defeated everywhere we can manage.

I just found out Pillowfort's shutting down soon, and I'm so fucking angry. The sites I like die, shitholes like tiktok and Instagram thrive because Normies like them.

Also I will say, this is why I hate @giorgoskallis.bsky.social "sufficiency"/"limits" vision of degrowth, because it'ill apply the same factors that killed Pillowfort to everything I love Just resource starvation & NIMBY sabotage of any attempts at expanding until it caves, but w/ intentionality.

Most people in the "sufficiency" brand of degrowth are the sort of people who'd cut computer lab & the arts for football because the latter uses less electricity, the "democracy" they want is the choking off of weirdos and outcasts in the way small towns always do, just applied to the world.

Hey, so the test results came back, and it turns out you have a severe deficiency of the indefinable essence that gives people value. Yeah, no, MATERIALLY you're a fully realised person with real hopes and dreams, but ONTOLOGICALLY you have roughly the same moral worth as a moderately clever gerbil.
