Politico wrote up Zohran playing basketball with the uncovering-a-big-scandal tone the same day the NYTimes wrote up "credible allegation that The President of the United States raped a woman" as a political strategy story. Broken media in a nutshell
New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a group of his friends have been secretly using the NYPD Police Academy’s gymnasium in Queens to play pickup basketball — scrambling some operations at the facility. w/ @grahamrayman.bsky.social & Joe Anuta www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

flashbacks to hiding this issue to read before my parents saw it
In 2005, Time Magazine did a cover story on “The Battle Over Gay Teens.” It’s the same handwringing we see now from “concerned” adults on behalf of young people. “Kids are disclosing their homosexuality with unprecedented regularity–and they are doing so much younger.” time.com/archive/6596...

Nothing is a more convincing admission that you know your entire administration is corrupt than giving criminal pardons to EVERYONE.
Scoop: White House lawyers are weighing preemptive mass pardons for junior staff, sources says Under discussion: Pardoning everyone involved in deportation, war, or trade policy www.washingtonsun.com/whitehouse/w...

Much of the modern digital world only exists because of human social norms. The Internet's backbone exchanges data at light speed because a bunch of regular folks, essentially, shake hands & agree to do so. Lots of fragile, vital infrastructure only survived because nobody decided (yet) to knife it.
Security through obscurity is a terrible principle but in practice a lot of things didn't get hacked bc people ignored them, or didn't know they existed, or just generally got missed. AI makes it easy to probe all of these things at scale + makes it easier to find/develop exploits

@lunaraptor.bsky.social For the most part, it's just... all software has bugs. We just didn't look *that* deeply into every nook & cranny of every platform before because it wasn't practical to do so. Now people are telling LLMs, "dig into this" for every major tool, and finding bugs everywhere.
Well it's sure a good thing that there have been more cybersecurity layoffs over the past year than any other time in history, right? ...right?
wrote about "Black October," the PHP vulnerability, and the AI-fueled dread and panic I'm seeing among almost all of the cybersecurity experts I've ever known. I think people w/ LLMs are brute forcing software the same way they brute forced social media w/ slop www.404media.co/php2shell-bl...

Glad to see CNN reporting on this. @jimacosta.bsky.social and I raised concerns about DHS potentially using a military-grade “heat ray.” After 20+ years in national security, I find this deeply troubling. A weapon designed to inflict intense pain. Against civilians? Why does DHS need this?

we used to conduct an interview where you had to log in to a linux VM that we’d “pre-broken” with a handful of obvious footguns (disk full, wrong perms, etc etc) and we had to stop running it because opus 4.6-era could one-shot it
the real answer to the php-fpm linux challenge we ask is to delete the box and rewrite it all in rust

the routine, pay for play pardons are all by themselves one of the worst corruption scandals in american history!
My brain cannot process this level of corruption. She was being paid $50 million to engineer a pardon from Trump *while working at the Justice Department* as a "Special Government Employee." And it worked. He got the pardon, and she got the money. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/20/u...

This is an excellent press question. Whistleblowers are long able to bring a qui tam lawsuit which DOJ can join & get 15-30% of any settlement under the False Claims Act (which is used often to address health care fraud including in Medicare & Medicaid) compared to only 1% under this capped $ fund.
Q: You're offering 1% to whistleblowers for turning in what you're defining as fraud. The False Claims Act, which has been on the books since 1863, offers between 10 and 25%-- TRUMP: At 1% people will make millions and millions of dollars

New in PN: Who wants to visit an authoritarian America? "Data shows the US on its way to being as unpopular a tourist destination as Russia, & for roughly the same reasons. In both countries, a tourist who runs afoul of the govt might spend months in a freezing warehouse without no legal counsel."

Again, this seems to be Republicans' big closing message for the midterms, so it's worth asking -- what the fuck are they talking about. Ask any parent with a kid in public schools if they'll so much as give them an Advil without written and signed permission. Then show them this insane shit.
Ashley Hinson claims Josh Turek supports "allowing kids to change their gender at school and not tell their parents"

The Republicans siding with the Kremlin is a Trump signature, something no GOPer would have believed possible even 15 years ago. Populism is poison.
Both parties have made legislative mistakes they have harmed the country…no question…but, only one party has sided with this country’s number one geopolitical enemy…or more accurately coward in fear and capitulated to their leader who is a bona fide Russian asset.

remember how circa 2018 you could spot a facebook boomer from a mile away. like their brains were just totally cooked. half of what they said was incoherent. x-brain is less incongruous because politics itself is more Online, but it's still pretty noticeable when someone's brain is cooked by x

Crazy idea: Democrats should defend immigration and immigrants, run on the idea that immigrants make America great, and stop Homer Simpsoning themselves into the shrubbery every time Republicans try to demagogue it.
New Marist poll of Texas finds 61% say undocumented immigrants should stay in US if meet certain requirements. Only 35% say they should leave. A majority of noncollege white men (Trump base) says stay. Supports my case (see piece/thread below) that Trump opened way for new pro-immigrant consensus
Dengue and malaria travel in the same circles. Wouldn't be surprised to see malaria show up in Florida next.
1/ Dengue is having quite the year in Florida. For the first time ever, more cases are being acquired locally than linked to travel abroad. This is a sign of a bigger shift: dengue is becoming a more regular concern in the southern U.S. Let's take a look at why…

Musk says he didn’t cut services to thwart Ukrainian self-defense, the US govt did. A senior US official says the Trump White House had nothing to do with that, implying Musk did it. A problem is they’re both serial liars, Putin sympathizers, and anti-democracy, so who knows.
Axios reporter: ‘A senior U.S. official said the Trump administration had nothing to do with the alleged Starlink service constraints.’
