The rhetoric around the “AI race” belies a dangerous assumption: the destination is fixed, and all we can control is the speed. But we can change the direction. There is not only one AI future, and we can choose a different course. www.aspendigital.org/blog/its-not...

aspendigital.orgIt’s not the speed, it’s the directionAmidst calls to pause or “pace” AI research, B Cavello challenges the inevitability of our current trajectory, proposing new AI research priorities that center public agency.

Man we share a lot of politics, and kudos to folks who can do good work in spite of this - no shade to the poster here - but the degree to which I don’t fuck with the DSA only grows over time.

A tough thing in explaining to people why having children is enjoyable is that all the bad stuff is very easy to explain (lost sleep, lost time, more sickness, less sex, etc. etc.) whereas most of the really good stuff whispers.

there might be feelings better than having your kid snuggle up asleep on you but there is no feeling like it. I am a simple ape and probably you are too

I am 100% in favor of people who don't want kids not having kids, but watching your kids play on the beach on a day where all your responsibilities are asleep is a peak human experience of a type you will struggle to get elsewhere.

Congrats to Lula on overcoming Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump to defeat Hospital Pervert Jr., even as his opposition literally blocked off roads and turned off bus service during election day. Fascists are scary but they are always, 100% of the time, ultimately gigantic fucking losers.

the reason you issue preemptive mass pardons is to reassure junior staff who are shitting themselves that they’re safe and they don’t have to flip on you. going to be very important to push back on their validity, which is nil, preemptively also

Not that it's surprising that Trump supports child rape but it is fucking nauseating to see it so directly.

Q: Now that you know the backstory about Amy Acton and her stepfather and why she hasn't talked to her mom in so long -- her stepfather was indicted for rape -- do you change your mind about the ad? TRUMP: No. No. It's a mother speaking badly against Amy Acton. You don't know anything.

Currently, police are demanding both obscene amounts of surveillance power and a slap on the wrist when they abuse it, as they seem to be doing incessantly and gleefully. We do not need to tolerate this.

travis reposted

We need to make it a federal crime for police officers to use surveillance data in any unauthorized fashion. Put a few of these loathsome people away for 20+ years, and I guarantee we’ll see a whole lot less of this behavior.
