The anthropormophising of AI, the idea it has consciousness and agency, and can go 'rogue' is an attempt by tech companies to limit their liability, optimise user engagement and maximise stock value I said in the debate on the JCHR report on AI and Human rights, led by @alexsobel

"Christian nationalism" in the UK is essentially a post-religious identity. Unlike the evangelical right in the US, it has no theological content, does not require belief in God & demands no moral or religious commitment. It reduces Christianity to a cultural "heritage" to be "defended" from Islam

Two brilliant Labour & Co-operative wins, with a hold in Lambeth and a gain from Reform in Newcastle-under-Lyme! 🌹🐝 Congratulations to our new councillors Molly Hartill and Andrew Fox-Hewitt, and to the local teams who worked so hard to elect them.

Today, we’ve confirmed our first Labour & Co-operative candidates for the 2027 local elections. As our electoral pact with Labour turns 100, they’ll champion shared ownership, stronger communities and more power for people to shape the future of the places they call home.

The idea that Houthis are somehow remote-controlled by Iran to the extent that their ambitions can be switched off through a deal with Tehran is a serious analytical error that always misread how much the wars around Yemen and Saudi Arabia's Southern border have an Eigendynamik

There's been an increasing trend of reactionaries with imperial ambitions cynically using the language of decolonisation to support those ambitions and those of others. Israel, Argentina, Morocco, even the US when you look at how Claremont talks about Canada and Greenland. Hindu nationalists too

The evidence is clear: countries with lower NEET rates than the UK get there almost entirely through higher rates of post-18 education. In these countries, more young people stay in education for longer and often combine it with work.

Palestinians in Gaza are experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe. It is unfolding before our very eyes. I've joined colleagues urging the Home Secretary to ensure women and children to find safety in the UK. We must offer refuge to those fleeing unimaginable suffering.

The decline in Labour’s membership is horrifying - but it needn’t be terminal. By building a culture and pioneering new practices to realise pluralism, internal democracy and participation, we can rebuild our movement. 1/2

On the night of 2–3 August 1944, nearly 3,000 Roma men, women and children were murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Today, on European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, we honour the victims of the Roma genocide and reaffirm our duty to preserve their memory.

The events in Ceuta are obviously dramatic and require rapid action, but politicians in other countries collecting points is disgusting. For example Denmark suggesting Schengen closures, what do they think, that 10000 people are going to hop on a plane to Copenhagen? Help Spain, don’t be a populist

Alongside Imran Hussain MP and over 80 MPs and Lords, I recently wrote to the Foreign Secretary calling for comprehensive sanctions on Israel. The world’s top court is clear. Israel’s occupation of Palestine is illegal - and Governments must act now to end it!

The border regime contributes to this kind of situations. Before the closure of the border and the establishment of the requirement of Schengen visa in 1991, Moroccans used to enter Ceuta and the rest of Spain without risking their lives and physical integrity.

People that only mention Myanmar to try to dunk on / undermine those raising awareness for what's happening in Gaza, are not acting in good faith at all. There are plenty of people who talk about both the what's happening to Palestinians & what's happening in Myanmar.

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

Just wondering, where all the “say it’s a genocide” folks have been when it comes to Sudan and Myanmar?

The Prime Minister has launched a national conversation on social care. He has made it clear: profiteering – the extraction of profit from the people and firms that produce it – must end. In contrast, care co-operatives reinvest profit back to the carers and care they provide.

One of the dimensions of devolution I’ve always been excited by is what dozens of mayors with proper powers could do for the British political class’s breadth and depth of experience and expertise in the tricky job of executive political leadership and balancing the pressures and trade-offs.

Palestine has become the defining test of whether Labour believes that international law applies equally to all. @kimjohnsonmp.bsky.social calls for a clean break with Starmer's failure on Palestine, having coordinated a letter from over 80 MPs calling for sanctions.

The government will take a £12 billion hit on the public finances if/when it belatedly reduces the current [unrealistically high] OBR projection of net migration averaging 235k for next 3 years to about 130-150k. (But it could double that cost if it wants to stay closer to zero net migration).

Ian Dunt@iandunt.bsky.social

It's funny how no-one ever asks where the money is coming from when you announce a cut in immigration.

Andy Burnham has renewed commitment to ending rough sleeping!👏✨🤞 But you can’t end rough sleeping without recognising the overlap with hostile immigration laws. If the PM is serious, he must scrap the hostile environment and recognise how cruel immigration policies contribute to rough sleeping. 💰➡️🩹🔥
