This is the broken-brained white American mythologizing that made a TV show called “Happy Days” that took place during Jim Crow.

This is an example of how nostalgia for the old days is simply nostalgia for when you were younger. The idea that America was a post-racial society in the 1970s/1980s only makes sense if you were literally a child at that time and couldn’t observe what any adult was experiencing.

I grew up in the 70s. My parents used really diparaging language about minorities. Lot's of people did. It was as wrong then as it is now. I don't know how this person didn't notice that going on around her.

As a young adult in the '70s in N. Jersey, people still called Puerto Ricans "spicks," Jews the K word, and blacks the N words. Occasionally, you heard wop, guinea, and dago. Poles were still the brunt of stupid jokes. I was told that my family lived in the Irish ghetto b/c we didn't own a home.

I fully believe that, for some people, the statement that they and others around them didn’t see skin color when they were young. I know someone like that, and I’ve slowly been showing him that his childhood was uncommon. People with a broad social awareness should know better, though.

But we also had “Good Times”, “What’s Happening” “welcome Back Kotter”, “the Jeffersons” etc which showed the difficulties of the time. They had an effect on this white girl.

Like gamers who wax nostalgic about entertainment from their youth that "didn't get political," 99% of these complaints boil down to "I was an oblivious child in the past and didn't understand what was happening around me; I now long for that"

William Shatner saying the Trek he was in didn't do politics it did "social commentary", in a show specifically designed to sneak politics past the censors But yeah, rewatching some stuff from when I was younger and other bits hit a lot harder than I remember

There were a few years when woke waz sorta cool, Fat Albert & J5 cartoons on Saturday morning, black sitcoms on prime time, Roots, woke coke ads, disco, etc. Reagan swept all that away.

Really sweetheart? When I was in high school in Tampa, Florida in 1970-71, we were just integrating the campuses across the city. White folks were not happy. I guess they peeked out from under their hoods and saw color. People remember what they care to and nothing else!

She doesn’t realize that she NEEDS to see color in order to appreciate the culture and contributions of others that don’t look 👀 like her. But then again, maybe she just wants to live in a world where only white people exist. 🤔

Happy Days takes place in the 50s which is idolized as the most perfect time in US history. It wasn’t. But since it was on TV is must have been, right? I think it was a whitewashing of US brains.

in 1972 my older sister was in a band exchange program. one of the band exchange students was black. being in small country hick town USA no other families were willing to take this person. my mom and dad had no problem with it. so just a story from 1970's

I've seen this same account with many similar takes, and I really think it's someone Elon boosts to go viral and push a campaign of "The Left went too far and we lost the Good Old Days!"

I was well into adulthood before it occurred to me to look up the lyrics of “Those Were the Days,” the song Archie & Edith sing in the opening to All in the Family. They're nostalgic for the Great Depression.

"Seems we need a President like Herbert Hoover again" (who famously did not believe the government was supposed to "promote the general welfare" by helping people, and give to your local Red Cross!)

To be fair, the character of Archie Bunker was a caricature and everything he said -- and that song -- were meant ironically. Sadly some people didn't understand that and actually thought Archie was a great guy. 😖

I grew up in the 70s and 80s, this was only true if you lived somewhere that had no diversity. Everywhere else, race and ethnicity were defining characteristics of everyone, including the very Irish-American kid from Brooklyn.

What’s annoying about this is that there has been slow and steady progress within DEI but they’re seeing it as regression. It’s just the Member Berries nostalgia variation of “these [slurs] today keep shoving it in my face!”. Which is a classic white supremacy position.

Reminds me of a good liars vid where the man on the street explained he was voting for trump to bring back the days when he would just ride his bicycle around his neighborhood all day. They had him confirm that was indeed when he was a child. He didn't get it.

This. Grew up in the 70's/80's, too and perspective is KEY - I had this worldview until I realized as a kid you see what suits you & are oblivious to so much. We grew up 'watching' an integrated Sesame Street and The Cosby Show was in our home every week, but that was on TV - not in our backyard.
