Hassett: "Last night, I was in a restaurant and I asked every waiter, 'How much money did you make?' now that they're doing their taxes because of the no tax on tips. The lowest answer was $3,000 and the highest was $10,000. This is really an economy that can't be slowed down."

Tax accountant here… I’ve done exactly 3 tax returns this season (out of a few hundred) where the no tax on tips actually benefitted the taxpayer. I’ve done many returns with tips up to about $1K, which really has no booming consequential outcome on the tax return.

1. The type of restaurants Hassett eats at are not representative of America - they are Washington DC K Street lobbyist restaurants 2. $3-$10k per year? month? week? Context is relevant 3. The conversation never happened

Yeah, pretty sure he has to mean "how much did you make last month" and while $10k/month is better than a lot o possible options? Still not freakin' great.

Did he ask the waiter what they actually walked with? Because generally, you have to tip out the bar and the kitchen staff and bussing staff and sometimes if you have food runners, you have to tip them as well. 😳

Ask the restaurant owners how this is working? I am exhausted by the tipping culture. I don’t eat out anymore. Even on business travel I’m packing meal preps when driving or hitting the grocery when flying.

This never happened. I also didn’t think the “no taxes on tips” is law. I thought it never got put in his disgusting ugly bill.

Hasett is my fav for so many reasons. 1st he shares a tree office with a squirrel. 2nd squirrel is smarter and avoids dumb comments, 3rd Hassett says really dumb things very often. 4th Hassett says he doesn't care about consumer or 2/3 of economy and lastly, the moron thinks the war has no effect.

Absolutely a true statement!! Just like I make $1.6 million a year shovelling shyte on a pig farm. Perfectly believable just like everything coming out of the orange turds mouth.

Fully picture the scene he imagines, Hassett grabbing random the arms of waiters walking through the dining room to ask about their income. "Stay away from table 10, the guy is weird and asking really inappropriate questions; but the boss says he is somebody."

How much money did YOU make, Hassett? Off the backs of taxpayers, I might add. Because this is an economy that the blatant grift can't be slowed down obviously.

I generally try to get to know staff because my wife is in the industry. Ain't no way in hell they're being friendly and talking that much about money with this Temu Colin Robinson-ass. If this DID happen, that conversation is being exited as quickly as possible. "You had the Dewar's, rocks, then?"

If anything like this happened, which I doubt (though I can easily see Hassett pestering servers), they just told him whatever would make him go away.

every waiter? and they answered him truthfully? of course they did because they had nothing better to do than answer some rando white guy’s personal questions

I get taxed on my earnings Hassett Hound. What about me? Basing the pulse of the economy solely on wait staff seems silly don’t you think Hassett Hound?

Look at math truths. If this was a restaurant where waitstaff work full time to support their families: 40 hrs/wk x 50 wks = 2000 hours. $3000 ÷ 2000 = $1.50/hr saved from taxes. Does this give smug assholes a great feeling that people get to keep a buck fifty an hour in their pockets?

Yes, the entire American Economy and job market is based on jobs with tips. I'm sure that mechanical engineer with student loans still to pay is happy they're getting $10,000 in tips. And we all KNOW the teachers are raking it in from their students.

…and by “restaurant” he means “Mar-a-Lago’s dining room” and by “waiter” he means “fat old oligarch” with their comically younger mistress and by “tips” he means “insider trades” or “no bid government contracts” then add a few zeros to the thousands. 🧐 #taxtherich
