Brooke Rollins: "Until today, any retailer accepting the food stamp had to stock 12 or more 'nutritious' foods. Real food. Well, today, we're more than doubling that to 28, but we're also closing the loophole. You could stock jelly as a fruit and jerky as a real protein. All that changes today."

They like the idea that being poor if a moral failing because this way they can justify (to themselves) not helping people. And they can think better of themselves because the rigged economic system is helping 'good' people like themselves. It's such a tell from people who claim to be moral.

I am effing enraged at orthorexic rich people telling poor people what to eat and what they get to eat. If you have never scraped coins together for food and bought food by calories/dollar, shut it.

Depends what they force the window on "healthy options" to look like. Can't wait for gas stations and bodegas to start carrying a small selection of raw potato cubes and iceberg lettuce by the leaf.

I worked at a gas station that has a handful of fresh food options. They make enough in selling gas, tobacco, lotto and coffee alone to absorb any losses from fresh and hot foods. They won't drop those items b/c it keeps the EBTs coming back for scratchers & snuff. Bodegas may be screwed, yeah.

Exactly what I came to say. Expanding the minimum = shutting it down at the edges of availability. Just like how they evicted disabled people who were under the care of medicare fraudsters rather than switching them to legit service providers.

But I thought a piece of chicken, a piece of broccoli, a corn tortilla, and one other thing was enough for a meal. Now we need 28 other things?

Because as the people were moaning about hunger and clamoring for food, Christ said to the boy with the fish and loaves: "Is that levain bread? And absolutely no shell fish!"

So, smaller retailers in food desert areas will be impacted, not large retailers. Golly, I wonder what the demographics of those areas look like? Also - if people selling food stamps is REALLY that big of a problem, how many food stamps equal one insider oil futureds deal?

Incredible stuff from an administration that manages to combine arrogance, ignorance, and dangerous levels of incompetence into one nonstop performance.

we all know the cruelty is the point etc but this protein obsessed admin axing jerky for eligibility is nuts. and there are plenty of reduced sugar jams and jellies that are perfectly healthy to eat and contain lots of real fruit. but they just want people to starve i think, so

That’s a completely bullshit statistic. It’s ridiculously untrue. Oh, there might be that many people without access to the cheese dept at Westside Mkt or Zabar’s, but they are all within range of more than one or two real supermarkets. And lots else. Who comes up with these stats? White people?

This can't is so full of shit. Sec if Agriculture has never gone hiking, biking or adventuring. Jerky is actually a high protein food. The purpose of all these changes is to ensure that food is unaffordable for SNAP receiptents. They brag about kicking people off SNAP so more starve. Now priced out

In a righteous world Brooke Rollin and all of her family members, close associates and their family members will experience hunger the way Brooke has decided poor families and their children should starve.

I wonder if these people have actually considered the logistical challenges they're creating. Because fresh fruit and vegetables take up a LOT of space and they need controlled environments to extend their shelf-life. That means refrigeration and more water consumption. That's expensive.

And the backrooms of your average grocery store? Those spaces are -tight-, and the refrigeration rooms are even smaller. Sure, produce like onions, potatoes, whole melons, apples, don't require any regular misting or kept cold...but they still have limited shelf life.

And sticking them in big stalls like you see at Walmart or Publix? That means they're going to be touched by a lot of hands, and that leads to damage. One of the biggest issues grocery stores have is food waste, much of which is fresh produce getting tossed after it becomes unpleasing to look at.

All of this would translate to grocery stores incurring higher operating cost from refurbishing their backrooms, higher electricity and water consumption bills, and the cost of securing more produce to meet that regulatory demand. Are grocery stores going to do that? Oh, hell to the fuck no.

I honestly don't know which I find more weird. The vapid smiling as they lie to your face, or someone looking into the cam with disdain and anger, coming off like you just spat on his grandmother. Neither inspires confidence.

This doesn’t address food deserts at all. You think urban minimarts can stock raw meat and fresh produce for people who don’t have cars and can’t drive 20 minutes into the suburbs to find a full grocery store? As usual, Republican policy build with magical thinking, not facts.

Real priorities for this administration…… Ballrooms. Ban on jelly, and jerky. Golden statues, and arches. Reopening waterways that were previously opened before you started a war. Single-handedly destroying an economy that you inherited, that was the envy of the world. The Art Of The Deal……. 🤦‍♂️

Why is 28 such a magic number? How did they arrive at that requirement? What scientific process did they follow? Or is that the figure that they calculated would make stores give up on accepting EBT?

also they want people so poor they're too desperate to report employers breaking the law. or just straight up starved to death.

My elderly disabled friend, who luckily gets to live in an attic for free, doesn’t qualify for SNAP. Because she is on disability and Medicare. She makes a big pot of soup every week and she gets to have a bowl of day. But sure she’s definitely trying to take advantage of the government.

Of course, everything is relative to state and even in some cases counties. They also take in into consideration what you have as an “asset” and what you pay to live. So my friend technically does not pay rent. So they’re like “oh you’re rolling in the dough!” 🙄

Hmmm. Wonder if that new nutritious food will be shelved next to the fruit flavored vapes that this admin just okayed? FFS! Idiocracy was not a comedy movie, it was a literal foretelling of and blueprint for the current admin!!!

I mean, do we really think it's a huge problem that people choose what to spend their food money on? Do you feel cheated because someone buys jelly and jerky instead of brussel sprouts? This is our national problem when the billionaires are looting our Treasury and running up insurmountable debt?

It would be interesting to know which "affordable packaged foods" manufactures failed to please Trump. The meat jerky thing is beyond me. Does someone really have to explain that meat jerky is a great protein source that does not require refrigeration?

No regulations on companies or AI or really anything else, but haven’t fucking forbid that you feed the poor. Better make sure they have about 20,000 things. I need to worry about for that little extra money so they can actually feed themselves and their families. Fucking sick people.

i lived in a very rural area where the only place to get food was dollar general which is almost entirely foods that they want to eliminate (it was not a DG market store so no fresh food), and obviously wages are super low in that county so a lot of people get assistance...what should they do?

Almost all sell a lot more than that. And they are small independently owned businesses. As for prices, have you checked out Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s? Everything is expensive in a city. It doesn’t bother you that the government is trying to tell people where they can shop and what they can eat?

I mentioned WF as a side note. And TJs is CHEAP. The mayor’s store in that location will be a failure for exactly the reason I mentioned. There’s no need for it there — or in most if not all of NYC. Not any more. Just watch and see— if it even gets built.

I don’t know why you’re so passionate about this that you’re arguing up and down the comments but not everywhere is NYC. Food desserts exist and food is food. Jerky is a protein

There are folks who pick up milk and cereal and canned soup in convenience stores who won’t be able to anymore under this new rule. If they don’t pass a supermarket on their walk or bus ride home, they’re out of luck.

How’s that? Nothing’s forcing current stores out of business. They just have to stock a little more — and many already have. There’s nothing excessive about these new rules. Some Dem politicians in fact have been trying to crack down on EBT junk food abuse for years.

tx has banned some sugary drinks and all candy from ebt sales, walking down the drinks aisle in certain stores is nothing but little signs ‘not covered by ebt’ it so bothered me I put 4 boxes of capri sun in my food bank donation

They buy overpriced junk because it’s there. Especially the kids. And yeah, I’ve been on EBT too. I’m not some white guy in the suburbs. People actually think that living on chips and slimjims is ok?

Also it’s weird how every single person that “see what people on EBT buy” only ever sees “chips and slim jims” or “lobster and prime rib”. Never anything in between. Why it’s almost like people are advancing a narrative they’ve been fed by conservative vs a clear picture of reality. Anyhoo…

We're near an apple stand. They sell apples. 1 item. They don't meet the reqs, so they can't accept snap. We're near a large gas station, too. They stock well over 500 skus, and barely meet the minimum requirements. This will move them from 2.8% healthy to 5.6%. But they still won't sell apples.

I bet you also get mad when you see a poor person with a cell phone. You may just need to shut up and stop living on spite and judgment.

Yeah it’s calories and energy. If you don’t have the time to make whole food because you are too busy just trying survive, those are the kind of things you are going to to eat.

Chips and cookies and slimjims. Right. You can still buy that stuff btw. But now these “markets” have to offer more than junk food. Most in NYC for example have already adapted by having decent deli counters with prepared foods.
