Everyone keeps asking me how I’m feeling about early voting so far. I’m feeling like nobody *actually* knows anything, and this is the most important midterm of our lives. I’d rather be us than them, but we can’t get comfortable. We can’t get complacent. Go vote like we’re down 3%.

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

Here's a direct link to House Dem's Judiciary Cmte report. The executive summary begins: "A growing body of evidence demonstrates that Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s." democrats-judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-su...

Per a new report from House Democrats, Trump's DOJ is withholding evidence of his ties to Epstein and slow-walking the complete release of the Epstein files. It's time to end the cover-up and expose the truth. Remember this when you cast your ballot. www.ms.now/news/house-j...

I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

Hey USA among all the reforms we need to take on I'd like us to look at how long there is between the election and when the winners take their seats, that's a whole lot of time for the losers to screw everything up on their way out. Most other countries it happens a _lot_ faster than that.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

Hell yes

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

This is all true. I think the real trick is to convince ordinary people who are not politics nerds that this stuff is as important as the price of gas and and pwning the [whoever] and that someone on Nextdoor thinks they saw a boy on the girls' soccer team. I don't know how you do that.

This is literally the end of the rule of law. If a President can pardon people committing crimes on his behalf - and the Supreme Court says he himself can't be prosecuted for crimes committed as part of his job - then the government becomes a lawless entity able to violate our rights without limit.

This is where it's hard to tell the anarchists they're wrong. If we can't make democratic institutions resilient and resistant to authoritarian takeover, maybe the only thing to do is to make sure no institution has very much power? I'm an institutionalist, but... I dunno.

Anyway, nothing I can do about that right now, 10 days before the midterms. Getting the gavels away from Mike Johnson and, I would argue, John Thune _right the hell now_ is necessary (but not sufficient) to slow down authoritarianism. And that' looking good atm. One step at a time.

There are ways you can make democracy robust and resilient, but those things require folks to think about and prioritize some really abstract stuff that has little to no bearing on everyday life. And when everyday life is _hard_, how do you persuade folks to do that?

A whole lot of ink has been spilled about relative qualty of various Trek series and seasons, and I have no interest in really going to the mat for this take, but: Based on a recent rewatch S2 TNG is mediocre to bad BUT in early S3 you can start to see flashes of the greatness that comes later.

Also: - 'moot point' - 'couldn't care less' - 'Scuse me while I kiss the sky'

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

Has anyone played any of the niche Axis & Allies games? North Africa, D Day, Stalingrad, etc.? Are they any good*? * All the caveats about them being squarely beer-and-pretzels casual wargames rather than serious military sims

My first 5 TTRPGs, in the order I played them: 1. Star Frontiers. I’mone of those oddballs who didn’t start with D&D 2. D&D of some variety. Didn’t take long for me to land here 3. Boot Hill 4. The James Bond RPG from Victory Games. It was run… poorly 5. 2E AD&D, college in the early 90s

I’m not sure Boot Hill was exactly a fun time either, I distinctly remember a big argument about how much bacon and coffee we should pack for a weeklong ride into the hills. The GM decided it was critically important; it was on the equipment list by the lb, it must be important to track by the lb

That it'll fail because they lack sufficient consolidation and centralized control does not make it trivial that the president of the United States is trying to steal elections and produce an illegitimate sham Congress. It is open rebellion against the Constitution and morally tantamount to treason.

I might have Boot Hill and Bond out of order. Also this doesn’t count the wretched sci fi RPG I made in the late 80s, it was not good but I loved making it. I watched too many action movies and wanted my combat deadlier than Star Frontiers was… I learned vaguely realistic guns were not fun

Telling a judge, a week & a half prior to an election, that only one outcome is acceptable. Here we go. I've said this before, but I'm done being afraid of this mfer. Legally this is bullshit, the DoJ has no role whatsoever in this. None. Zero. Zilch. Nothing. Extralegally it's complicated. But.

But no. Fuck this fuckin guy. He doesn't get to do this. He's going to lose and he's going to cry about it and I'm going to laugh and laugh and laugh. Then I'm going to have a drink and laugh some more. Fuck him, and fuck his rich friends. They're going to lose, and we're going to win.

If Acton wins, it is essential for Democrats not to be the bigger person in this situation. You tap dance on this asshole’s grave and you make a big deal of how it doesn’t matter what your party is, what issue you support it not, but campaigning like this is wholly unacceptable.

PS I know "yay let's unionize" sounds good but doesn't give any concrete action steps. This video explains very succinctly how you actually go about forming a union at your job (the organization you get in touch with for help depends on your industry.) youtu.be/ibNkDZXDMDQ?...

I hope workers in other game studios see WoTC unionizing, and see the mass layoffs and BioWare closing and decide it's time to put their foot down. What do we have to lose by unionizing? A job that you're afraid every day you'll be laid off from anyway? UNIONIZE THE GAME INDUSTRY!

I used to play a lot of flight sims. Back in the day I had a thing that simulated small private aircraft, but I don't remember the name - and I loved Falcon 3.0 (an F-16 simulator). I'm feeling drawn to getting back in. What's good these days? DCS, Nuclear Option, & Microsoft seem neat.

(I do not actually have an appropriate computer to run this on nor a proper stick/yoke & throttle* to control it with, so this is mostly aspirational unless I come into a few thousand bucks I don't know what to do with.)

* In real world fighters it's called HOTAS, "Hands On Throttle And Stick," control design such that you can do almost everything without taking your hands off the controls. No idea if that term gets used in the recreational simulator world.

It's impossible to overstate how twisted and evil those Texas mailers are; this is one of at least a dozen reasons. There are no depths to which the GOP will not sink, and they must be resoundingly defeated everywhere we can manage.

really can't get over the idea of a closeted trans kid getting one of those fake transgender resource mailers going out in texas and just having their stomach tie up in knots that someone knows who they are
