Maybe I’m just confused, but I thought once a candidate for a position is nominated by the President the hearing schedule in the Senate is controlled by the…Senate. If the president wants to control the schedule he’d have to withdraw the nomination, not say “sorry guys, not today”. Am I wrong here?

Based on news accounts, what actually happened is Dems‘ pro-FISA caucus agreed to reauthorize FISA once Clayton was confirmed. But Trump decided to demand more, killing the emerging deal. Basically the same reason we’re heading toward $5 gas.

Each time he pushes the SAVE Act like this, I take heart from the confirmation it gives that he knows he doesn’t yet have enough tools in the box to successfully rig the midterms without it.
