Rep. Tom Kean finally speaks after months away from Congress for a previously unexplained absence: "I was given the diagnosis of depression ... the doctors recommended I remain in the hospital to address my illness"

To those of us who have been treated for depression (in my case a psych clinic), he STILL isn't telling the whole truth. It might be truth that his basic diagnosis is depression but NO WAY does that require actions he has partaken in. His wife also disappeared. He can't work, but can trade stocks?

What I was trying to say is he should do to everything he can to ensure everyone gets the same level of support that he had and he should be open about his problems to help remove the stigma of mental illness. And more importantly good luck with your treatment.

I wish my loved ones with depression could fuck off all their responsibilities and get treated for 4 months!!! Must be nice to live in whatever world he’s in!

Try to imagine doing anything of this if you are a regular person working full time. You literally could do 0 of what was afforded him here. Your employer wouldn't gaf about your depression and would tell you your depression would be worse unemployed.

Yet he and his fellow GOP have cut people off Medicaid and decreased rural health care. F him. This is outrageous! Ask a Veteran who no longer has mental health care because of the slashing of budgets and jobs! 🤬

Something is fishy here. I don’t buy it. Who goes that quickly into and out of a depression that requires hospitalization? It feels like a coverup…and I’m not even paranoid.

Depression is a serious issue. But so is being a US Congress member. Simply dropping out for four months with no word to anyone should be unacceptable to the voters of New Jersey.

Yes I had it to the point of suicide but never was told to stay away in hospital for months … so his feels like usual cover for something else using mental health an excuse, of course his health secretary thinks it’s fake

His story does have a lot of holes in it. (Sorry about your own experience. Yes, it's apparently extremely rare to be told 'stay in the hospital' for extended periods.)

It must me nice to waste Tax payer money to take months off for being depressed... meanwhile I was up for hours last night, got 4 hours of sleep and had to get up and go to work at 7am this morning.

That’s not how it works. Even for a voluntary psych inpatient stay, someone with a non-psychotic condition & intact reality testing must essentially be an active lethal threat, either an attempt or plan w/means to kill or seriously injure oneself or others. Key details are omitted from his story.

So he was probably actively suicidal. It should be acceptable and reasonable for people to be in the hospital for depression. The problem is he thinks some folks don't deserve care.

Depression is a serious illness but this self-involved POS pimple on the GOP-Trump's backside voted against allowing fellow Americans to receive a FRACTION of the medical care he had, care >>>Americans desperately need-many TO SAVE THEIR VERY LIVES. www.nj.com/politics/202...

nj.comKean blasted for vote cutting Medicaid, putting at least 450,000 in N.J. at riskTom Kean Jr. voted with other Republicans on the congressional committee to make broad changes to the Medicaid program serving low-income people.

Tragic that I've become so cynical that all I can think is that this dickhead picked depression as the excuse because it's the hardest to argue with, and that whatever bullshit boondoggle he was on was so stupid that he's willing to use it even though it invalidates all the people

with depression who are in no position to simply remove themselves from the public eye - entirely forgoing work and society - in order to take care of themselves. So is he "cured", or is he going to disappear again?

The responses to Tom Kean’s speech makes me question why I’m on this app. While I disagree with his politics, as someone who suffers from depression, I applaud his courage, and hope for the best possible outcome for him.

I agree that severe, treatment-resistant depression is a thing, and it can be debilitating for long periods. What troubles me, though, is his phrasing, “given the diagnosis.” When the occasion arises, I say, “I had cancer,” not that someone else labeled me with it.” Ditto depression.

I was in the worst depressive state of my life for *all* of 2025. I wasn't allowed to vanish for four months, WITH PAY, and return to the high-responsibility job I had just ditched. I also didn't do stock trading as my only contact with the outside world. Point is: we can be happy he got help. I am.

Unfortunately this is not a the era of Polyanna thinking. If Kean was a Democrat the GOP would have him removed. When Lloyd Austin was MIA for 2 weeks for prostate surgery GOP lost their shit. When children are shot in their classrooms we get thoughts and prayers, not gun control. Sorry not sorry.

“The Doctor also recommended I shouldn’t tell anyone I wouldn’t be coming to work, or give up an anxiety-producing job and let someone else actually do it … for medical reasons. Constantly hiding from the press and being pressured to lie about it is part of the depression cure.”

If this experience gave him even a little empathy then he would become one of the strongest fighters for universal healthcare (the only way to guarantee everyone can access mental healthcare)

What’s HE depressed about? He’s very well paid. He has FULL benefits. He’s happily stealing benefits from those in need. He’s probably on the take since he’s in Congress “grifting”. Low stress job since he doesn’t have to do anything except cheerlead for Trump.

I didn’t get a hospital stay! I did get counseling when my wife passed away. And I carried on with my adult responsibilities like work, and maintaining my home, parenting. You all know whats involved. Betcha it was more like strapped down to a bed to protect him from hurting him self.

Apparently he has a history of refusing to talk to the press about his positions on anything. bsky.app/profile/rese...

I put him in Gossip Machine and found this story from 2024. Seems like he's been quiet and just got quieter www.njspotlightnews.org/video/rep-to...

So, if he’s fundraising, apparently he’s talking to his donors about what he believes, but New Jersey voters don’t get that same basic information?

If he's talking to donors, particularly corporate ones, he doesn't have to tell them what he believes. He just has to tell them he'll do what they tell him to do. Many members of Congress are just shills for the rich.

So this motherfucker gets to take MONTHS off, still collect a paycheck and his health insurance benefits...while everybody else who suffers from their mental health risks losing their job for taking a "me" DAY. He'll still vote to strip children and the elderly of essential care and protections...

He will now...without a hint of self-awareness...proceed to support Project 2025's plans for concentration/work camps for the homeless, mentally ill and addicted.

This doesn't fully ad up. Long term hospitalization for depression is more than unusual. Short term stays might imply immediate suicide risk, an inability to function (feed, care), or psychotic symptoms. Longer term, people are turfed to residential programs. Kean hasn't finished explaining.

Did he worry about his medical bills? Or sick pay? How did he pay his bills? The rest of us are depressed too Rep Kean, but most Americans can’t afford to be treated for it and I don’t know a single one that can take this much time off of work and stay in the hospital… so please share your tips….

He’s clearly using this as an excuse so when those of us on the left continue to question or scrutinize it the republicans can act like they give a fuck about mental health and demand we stop talking about it.

If you need to spend 3 months in a hospital for depression, and therefore not do your job, you should forfeit your position. It would be one thing if people knew but he and the Republicans hid it.

Check your plan- they may not be required to cover telehealth, but they’re definitely required to cover inpatient psychiatric care if a physician says it’s medically necessary. How much that still could cost depends on the plan.

After my sister was unexpectedly killed in a car accident, a therapist suggested I take time off work & go to a hospital to help me recover. If I remember correctly, I laughed. Who was going to take care of my kid? Pay for my care? Pay me? Just imagine if we got the recovery benefits this guy got.

I once looked for a voluntary "rehab" like facility for mental health if you were not actively trying to kill yourself but you needed recovery and intense therapy time during a serious depression. I found nothing remotely feasible for anyone not super wealthy.

Yup. The only option is hospitalization, and people are definitely gonna question that. I’m so sorry you weren’t able to access the best care for your needs and hope you did manage to find some kind of care that helped. ❤️

Thank you. I wish we did better at mental health support and health resources, generally, in this country. We’re a warmonger but what’s the point of being a global power if our people continue to live in poverty & fear, dying bc they can’t access what they need?

I worked in an IOP, yes people do get hospitalized for months - HOWEVER, it has to be something very serious for that to happen. And insurance will only cover so much. Ask me how I know, and how many HOURS I spent on the phone with insurance getting patients approved.

Then fucking resign! Hey, it's a bummer about your depression diagnosis, best wishes for your recovery, but your constituents elected you to DO A JOB. If you're unable to serve, due to health reasons or other circumstances beyond your control, STEP ASIDE so your constituents get served!

YES. When I was diagnosed and treated for PTSD after being the victim of a violent home invasion, i still went to work. Or should I say HAD TO go to work so I could pay my rent, eat, and have health insurance. Nice that he's rich and the son of a former governor.

Yeah something's off with that explanation he might very well have depression they don't usually treat you that long in hospital for depression usually it becomes outpatient pretty quickly unless there is other mental behavior that is causing harm to him as well

Ive recommended hospitalization for patients due to the severity of their mental health. The most common concern is "what about my job" for those employed. Must be nice to never have to worry about that.

If he cannot do his job then he needs to resign. My work place would never allow me to take that much time for depression! Why was he still getting paid. They should have to live by the same rules that we do in a work environment!

If as Rep. Kean “is a private person by nature” what is he doing holding a job that requires him to be in the public spotlight. Why is he running for re-election? Is his ego so big that he thinks he’s the only one qualified for the job”? If he wins the election, will he end up stepping down so Gov.

Sherrill has to fill the position until another election at taxpayer expense can be held? Why didn’t Kean disclose his mental health hospitalization earlier, for political gamesmanship? Glad he got the healthcare he needs, does he care enough about his constituents to ensure they can get the same?

Healthcare, including mental healthcare, is important for everyone. It’s just easier for nepo-babies with net worths over $10 million and cushy, no-show jobs that have great insurance. As state senator, he twice voted against raising minimum wage. emilyslist.org/sound-the-al...

emilyslist.orgRep. Tom Kean Jr. Can’t Outrun His Record Harming New Jerseyans’ Health Care - EMILYs ListToday, U.S. House Republican Tom Kean Jr. (NJ-07) flipped to vote with Democrats on the Affordable Care Act extension —…

Was he really hospitalized though? How many of us would still have a job? We are expected to trudge forward every single day and smile like everything's fine, despite bone crushing depression. I have sympathy for those with depression. I've fought it my whole life. But fuck this guy.

Same question! I have been diagnosed with Depression, Anxiety, Panic Disorder, and Complex PTSD. Working during a time when I’m in a place of wanting to isolate I don’t! I don’t have the luxury of being able to do this.

Must be nice to have your mental health/healthcare 100% covered by the government. When a family member recently had a mental health crisis, it cost them $100 an hour to see a psychiatrist because he wasn’t on her insurance

Fun fact: most therapists and psychiatrists don’t take health insurance because most health insurers in the Grand Ol’ U.S.A. are notorious for fighting any psychiatric claims. Especially when it comes to children and psychiatric health.

Depression can be serious, and lead to darker things. Looking pass his absence, I would inquire as to what caused that depression. Could it be his heart and spirit revolting against the things he was and has been doing against the people and country required as a treasonous Ratpublican?

Oh that explains it then. No further questions. Guess it’s fine for an elected official to just disappear for months at a time so long as they give a vague explanation that doesn’t really make sense afterwards

Had he been truthful on Day One, none of this blather would be necessary. Or better yet, he should have resigned his seat to address more pressing issues than his job.

With his healthcare system he could afford to do that. Congress should have to live with the healthcare the average American has. I applaud him for being open about depression. We need to destygmatize and support mental health care.

Yes, but he is living an entitled life to be able to walk away like that without explanation. For several months. Collecting a full paycheck and benefits. I lost a job for taking 2 weeks medical leave that was earned, for a major surgery, planned in advance. The private sector is not forgiving.

While I agree that Representatives and Senators have a higher standard when it comes to taking work off and that Kean should’ve resigned, it doesn’t read well how some folks here are treating depression. It’s a real ADA disability, and some jobs *do* allow you to take months off for it.

I’m sure he voted in favor of the bill which resulted in so many of his constituents losing their health insurance—including behavioral health. Zero sympathy for him and certain that his experience hadn’t resulted in him developing any sort of compassion for the NJ residents he’s put the screws to.

Depression is no laughing matter. It can be debilitating. That being said, the rest of us wouldn't be allowed to take paid months off of work to treat it.

First. I don’t believe any of the lying liars in the GOP. Are we going to find out later he was on a trip with his mistress? But, that being said, depression is real, and serious, and this country does nothing for mental health…unless you are a MOC, then you get months off with pay!

I think his constituents need to see documentation. Some redactions are okay, but we learned from Butler, PA, that just saying you were at the hospital is not nearly enough.
