Today, we’re excited to announce that the Bluesky network is federating, or opening up in a way that allows you to host your own data! Read more here for how this will affect your experience on Bluesky (in short: it won’t) and why this matters.  bsky.social/about/blog/0...

Does it make sense to try to build something that is both a bluesky PDS AND a Fediverse instance? That would be cleaner than the bridge everyone is talking about on Masto/Fedi IMHO

The article talks about their plans for federated moderation. It could use more detail, but it sounds like a node can choose whether to federate content that’s been tagged by other nodes with a certain reputation level. I’m not sure how confident I am in this “reputation” concept they have.

Yay🥳 What's being done to manage bots & trolls? Granted, I don't totally get "federating" but Twitter/X is ruined D/T bots & trolls. Fake accounts MUST be dealt with swiftly at a high level--flagged, investigated &/or immediately rejected. Loved Threads but then the bots came & were left unchecked

I guess the directory is still centralized? Will this change in the future as well? From what I see, we currently have got two fixed hosts: One is the directory to fetch data like PDS for a given DID, the other one is the central PDS to fetch the DID for a given handle?

Oh, I noticed today that if you put too many characters in your bio it just cuts off the end without warning... I had it happen with mine, and when I re-pasted the link there were 3 more characters

it looks like maybe the link points to a post from an account (@rhymaticdesires.bsky.social) that doesn’t exist?

It was great they have a setup script that does it all for you. After setup need to request that your PDS is federated on their discord server. I would say try it out but do NOT migrate your account as you may lose it!

Really excited for this - might wait for a published Docker image and some extra versions but will definitely roll my own PDS at some point.

Ignore comments that it's like discord or whatever. That's wrong. For the end-user experience there is no difference to what you know from Twitter etc. But you can choose where and by whom your data is hosted. Which gives you control over your account. And if BluSky dies, the network can live on.

there’s a little bit about the differences in the post! is there anything related you feel would be useful to clarify or expand on? thanks!

Nah, just a little bit of random coffee break musing. I skimmed just enough of the post to see that, but it's still the main thing that bugged me about Masto as an ex-Twit alternative

this is my chance to be the first person in history to smash through the guardrails and brick my own account!!! what an honor

Please give us the ability to mute a single user by tapping on their comment from our notifications. Currently we can mute thread from our notifications but we cannot mute a user without going to their profile from their comment. This is bad for all kinds of reasons. Please fix. Thanks.

AGL, this is exciting. I'm both excited for the fedeation, and sad that this will isolate bsky further from mastodon, which I had hoped would become the standard, but I understand the decisions a bit. Please, bsky - adopt the mantra but don't give it up as others did... Don't be evil.
