Here's the thing: there is no going back to a different era of Twitter. This doesn't replace it, Threads doesn't replace it, Twitter doesn't replace it. That era is dead, no return, it was a very fun 5-10 year window or so that dragged on past its prime until it dropped off a cliff.

maybe im doing it wrong but i feel like the various crises of 2026 have revealed the limitations of this platform for me. twitter was always invaluable to me in chaotic times bc you had a lot of subj matter expert weirdos coming out of the woodwork. just dont feel like there's a much of that here rn

The thing is the *entire internet* is different now than it was a decade ago (and, largely, not for the better). All of this is interrelated and there's no going *backwards* only forward. So work for a better future, don't angle for a return to an idealized past.

A typical thing on my local one is for someone to say "Remember what used to be here?" then others remember about six different things. Many of them "remember" things that have not been there since before they were born.

"I would like the things that currently exist to be more like I remember them being when I was younger and funner" is basically the entire Boomer cultural hegemony in a nutshell so I'd prefer not to repeat that series of mistakes ever. Nostalgia is a cop, all cops are bastards.

I'd like SOME things to go back to the way they were before Trump's ride down that escalator, when we had a semi-functioning democracy that needed a lot of work. But I was 20 when the Vietnam War ended. If you think I'm happy that he's returning us to those days, you're crazier than he is.

It’s been dead and buried so long, I’ve been on the other side of all the stages of grief to the point that I now only occasionally think about the place where I met the people who launched my career and my entire professional community.

It’s kinda like saying something about north Brooklyn in 2026 if you lived there in the late oughts. Like sure it physically still exists in the same place but it’s a fundamentally different thing now.

I think that this has a lot to do w/ who you follow and when you got here. I feel like the info in my feed is informative and legit, for the most part, and that I don't long for the days where I blindly trusted, checking out sources has to be a thing cultivating your feed is essential, is my point

but I got here on invites, so I was able to build my feed before a lot of the nonsense got here. it wasn't as hard to filter out the nonsense because of that. The discover feed is the wild wild west. i rarely go there.

I never blindly trusted anyone -- working with people in the public eye, that would have been career-damaging (see accounts that fake with one or two letters). I just wish there were more trusted news and sports sources here like back in Twitter's good days.

Mainly I hate it because it's full of friends of mine who now need work. I haven't noticed any slop, just the people who were put out of work by it.

Yes. There has been a huge, unreported exodus of government folks from X to LinkedIn, past and present. The quality of the shares & conversations is underappreciated & underreported; many people tell me they find my work there because it’s the only social media they use. Dismissing it is foolish.
